I was fascinated with the painting by John Everett Millais when I first saw a print of it many years ago in high school art class. His composition is wonderful and evokes the famous monologue where Queen Gertrude says, "There is a willow grows aslant the brook", and how Ophelia was, "incapable of her own distress".

I intended to do a modern urban take on it but Millais' painting is so rich I just went ahead and stayed with the original instead. I hope that isn't too cheesy.

x-site,

Thanks for your comments. The scene elements were modeled and textured in Lightwave, rendered in Maxwell. The figure is a Daz model. The textures are from here and there that I have collected over the years. The cattail's are a model I picked up somewhere and reworked. The tree and rosebush I did with a Lightwave plugin by Pawel Olas called Tree Designer. The foliage was done with another Olas plug in called Leaves Generator. On the far right is some ivy from The Ivy Generator.

Lighting is HDRI as I wanted a more or less flat light.

Cheers,
Ron

interesting... i recently caught a documentary on Botticelli (bbc imagination series)... it mentioned the influence of the painting 'primavera' on Millais and others. Check the dressed lady on the right side of 'primavera'... and the flower arrangements...

I don't want to sound like a hater... but your lady in the water looks life-less and plastic... kind of like a maniqui

Not that I could have done any better :)

You sure put a lot of effort and time in this piece and it shows though :D
