I don't think it's the same thing as the sphere preview since the wall has less geometry to work with from the start. Try increasing precision.

Ok, I have found the problem...
If you have a sharp corner (bricks for instance), you cannot set your offset to 1.0. The grout lines were being displaced inwards and at the corners, there was some clipping/intersecting going on which Maxwell does not seem to like. Even with the corners chamfered and smoothed, this still happens. So to fix my walls I need to offset them by 1cm inwards while setting my displacement offset to 0.0 so the white parts of the displacement map represent the outermost dimension of the wall's face.
Whew! That only took me all day to figure out... Don't tell the boss man.
