Well, with a dual core your options are not as good as say a quad or dual quad, but you can manually set which cores you want to use for each render. Task manager->processes tab->right-click on mxcl->set affinity. Then check the box of which core/s to use. I use this all the time.

Thanks Bubba for your reply, it seems i need a cpu upgrade soon.. :/ i also noticed those cpu related settings in the taskmanager and then kinda put them aside and forgot about them. I use your suggestions until a cpu upgrade is on the table. :)

A Q6600 would be nice, wouldn't it. I'm staying on my C2D, but that's one nice upgrade path.

When rendering on low priority in XP64, should it still use so much cpu that you can barely type without it lagging ?

Well, i wouldn´t advise running massive Photoshop files with hundreds of layers, but it shouldn´t lag to much. During my last render i rendered at "Lower than normal", and i could still work fairly smoothly in Photoshop.

Micha wrote:XnView ... I like it much. For example I need a wood texture - I look around at my hard disk per XnView thumbnail preview and if I found one, than I copy the path per Ctrl-C to to the texture UI of my render program. I like this workflow without to search the texture from within the texture UI of the renderer.
Or quick convert many files from one format to an other. Also it show HDRI files. Or you create a simple presentation per slideshow exe/scr output.
You can choose, that png alpha channels are shown or not. For example Vray for Rhino burn in the alpha information to PNG files. If I open this files in Photoshop, the background is missing. But per Ctrl+Shift+C I can copy the image with background from XnView to photoshop.
Also XnView show PDF and AVI. ... :D

I just stumbled onto IrfanView ....

..from the developer:

IrfanView is trying to create new and/or interesting features in its own way, unlike some other graphic viewers, whose whole "creativity" is based on feature cloning, stealing of ideas and whole dialogs from ACDSee and/or IrfanView! (for example: XnView has been stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, for 7+ years).
I'm gonna try it.......

Back with a review in a few days. lol....

i started to use XnView with x64 now instead of irfan view, mainly because IF often crasehd when browsing networkfolders.. or it lost the back and forward function when viewing single files (also just network)

IF has tons of functions but i don't like the interface.

.. and Xn has that nice function to send the image to fullscreen on the secondary monitor with middle mosue button...

talking about file browsers, do you know DeepExploration?
it's a 3d file browser and converter with many tools built in.. simply ingenious.

how does it work with rhino files? does it handle v4 files properly?

.. the RhinoThumbnail generator from the Labs page was one of the few things i could not get to run on x64 :?

I also chose XnView over IrfanView. I started years ago with the latter, which is a lot older afaik.

The 3D browser don't read 3dm files, but if I remember me right, it show the thumbnail images of the Rhinolab tool. The 3D browser is good for 3ds, obj ... model archives.

Hi all!

We are having a problem here...
Need to upgrade or workstations to a 64 bit system due to memory crashes.

I would like to run XP64, but we are using a Novell network and there are no client available for XP64 only Vista64.

I'm not a big Vista fan myself, but we really need a 64 bit system now!

Our 15 server renderfarm are running XP64...
Can I be shure that I wont experience any problems with running vista64 on my workstations and xp64 on my renderfarm?

At one point I had my small farm running XP on the nodes & Vista on the master, it ran no bother at all, although for some reason it required each node to have a password entry on startup.........no idea why, but I wasn't bothered because it worked.

Hope that's of some help.
