Marco, thanks for posting the raw version. It's very nice to see there's nearly no post processing here. I just see a discontinuity in the reflection on the edge of the plate.

Thanks. Yes, indeed. That´s bothering me, too...

Jokes allowed.
who is Herve? Where are his bananas?

[edited:] I have found them in your main gallery and then on his site insideko.com. I think his version is much better than mine. His bananas look more realistic because they seem to have that typical SSS, which I didn´t apply to my bananas.

Thanks again everybody for the kind words. :D

@Hervé: Thanks a lot - I really feel honoured when you say something like this. Your works are so amazing. I haven´t seen any better renderings yet. And... wow - No SSS used in your bananas?! I would have bet that...

hey don't be shy Marco... ! try to make a slighlty colored specular map... (the color map very unsaturated...)

Can you render them individually or are they attached together..? the hard part was to make 4 independant bananas fully textured (even the white fresh cut) but with the possibility to render them as one bunch..

anyway... we're both bananas masters... ahaah..
(no joke allowed please... eh he)

Thanks again, Hervé! I will have a look at the specular map thing.

My bananas are actually one single piece of geometry. Here are a few more screenshots:

This was my basic work in Maya:

after sculpting in ZBrush it looked as follows (ZBrush-Screenshot):

some details:

Unfortunately I haven´t managed to show those fine details via Maxwells displacement features exactly the way they look in ZBrush yet (whereas in Mental Ray I have no problem doing so) I have tried so many options but I don´t give up yet!

Modeling is so nice that it doesn't really need rendering!

Try increasing displacement precision. That's the main parameter that controls the amount of detail you want in the displacement.
