Hello everyone!

This is my first post in the WIP section! This is a piece I have been working on for quite a while and I am happy with the results I am achieving in Maxwell.

During the 80s there was this Japanese animation series called Macross. I liked their robot and ship designs so I decided to try to model one in Maya and render it on Maxwell. For those of you who don't know the series I am enclosing a design reference:

Anyhow, my attempt at modeling it in Maya and rendering it in Maxwell is so far is this:

Please critic!

Thanks for looking!

Cooly cool!

Awesome job!

A small critic: maybe the size of the light source is too big in relation with the size of the ship making it look small?

  Gasp! I hoped for half a minute you were trying to joke us by showing a model photo...but then i saw somewhere a little noise on a surface and realized then you didn't!
Great for effort, for technique...and for the subject!
I loved that serie as well, and the soundtrack still almost make me cry... :(

The objects looks interesting, unusual scene for Maxwell.

excellent modeling and texturing! :)

No crit, but I think it would be interesting to see this scene with an "outer space" kind of lighting setup. (High contrast, directional light ...)

If that is supposed to look like a model version then it is bang on, but if not then the scale is not reading well yet. Modeling and texturing is phenomenal so far though.

Great design! Materials and lighting could be more realistic, though...

Hehe, that is pretty damn cool!

Nice work on the modelling, you've captured the feel of the original wonderfully.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Sorry I didn't reply back immediately, but these past several months I have been improving this model and also playing with the lighting.

I agree, the scale is not reading correctly, I attribute this to two reasons: the lighting and the textures. I have tried to attack both on the examples below.

I tried Mike Verta's little trick for space lighting as outlined here:

However I found out that the rendering time is terribly long. On a 3GHz 8-core machine the image looked like this after 48 hours:

Oh well, maybe with the Next version of Maxwell I can get something more workable.

However, going in another direction I managed to have this image, which hasn't been retouched from Maxwell in any way (after 2 hours or so of rendering on the same machine):

Thanks for looking! :D

Maxwell is a lot of fun! :D

So, is this a known issue?
