Since many of you run XP64 on your machines and i'm considering upgrading to it, but i'm wondering about a couple of things as most of the programs i use are 32bit.

- Are there any programs which won't run in XP64 ?
- Can DX9 games be played in XP64 ?
- How's driversupport for hardware now ?
- Any other problems with XP64 i need to know of ?
- Running 32bit applications in XP64, is that a problem ?
- Videocodecs and QT and such things, do they exist for XP64 ?

I read that Zbrush 3.1 as a example can only adress 4gb ram in XP64 even if you have 8gb or more installed. Any similar issues with other applications you guys use ?

There are a few programs that wont run, its mostly newer ones though where the installer says this is an xp64 it wont install. Games I dont know about. Drivers are fine for all the common stuff. Running 32 bit apps for the most part is standard. When you install a x64 OS you get 2 program files folders the "program files" is 64 bit and then there is a "program files x86" folder that is where all the 32 bit programs install to. I know from experience Adobe CS2 needs to be installed in a custom folder because it wont install into the Program Files x86 folder. When I deploy CS2 I just make a folder called CS2 right in the C root so it would install into C:\CS2. I have never had a problem with codecs and QT either. Good luck Max

Also I'd recommend going the Vista64 route..........it's a better implementation IMHO. :)

Thanks all of you guys for your feedback on this.

Interesting to hear about the two installation folders, i didn't know it had that. And if it's labeled differently i can imagine installers get confused and that would cause the installation to fail.

If Crazybump doesn't work in XP64 then it's a problem :) it really is. Because that's one of the programs that needs to run there.

Why is Vista64 better ? i thought i heard the drivers were still pretty poor and it consumes way more ram than XP64 does.

Btw, i attempted a installation of XP64 in VMWare now and so far it runs however it looks like alot of the apps needed, even drivers for my motherboard and graphics and soundcard refuses to install. It could ofcourse be because of VMWare itself.

For sure Vista64 is 'bloated' until you turn off the pointless eye-candy and non-essential stuff........but a couple of hours spent customising and you've got a neat system........my Vista box actually consumes less RAM than my XP64 boxes.

Also MS are 'soon' to stop updates for XP64 [or so I've been led to believe?] so moving forward, I see it as something of a no-brainer............but, I am no expert on OS issues for sure! I can only say that personally, I have fewer issues/clashes in V and everything I've tried to install has run straight out of the box.

So far i haven´t had any issues with anything running XP64.
You may need to download additional drivers, but that´s pretty much it.

I´ld definitely advise against purchasing Vista. Not only is it a memory hog, any efficiency regarding file handling is basically terminated, plus you´ll have more issues with running several applications. From everything i´ve experienced, Vista is comparable with ME.

There is a reason for including a free sidegrade to XP in Vista Business, and more so for the fact that Vista Ultimate is a lot cheaper than XP these days.

Another vote for XP64, i'm very satisfied with it. No driver issues so far, and all the apps i need run on it. Generally speaking, your 32bit apps should work on it without problems, i haven't heard of Windows rejeceting them.

XP64 works very well here, only:

- adobe PDF printer dosn't work

- some free firewalls dosn't work

- QT for virtual realities (QTVR) dosn't work

I cast my vote for Vista 64. Very few problems here. No crashing... ever.
Any problems I have had came from idiot software giants (cough...Autodesk...ACA2008...cough) not supporting it. Which I was able to overcome. I recommend moving forward with technology, not backwards. :P XP64 was a testing ground for an optimized and more stable future OS called Vista.

As Micha said, Adobe PDF Printer is not working. It's because it installs as a "real" printer driver, and Adobe doesn't want to develop a driver for x64... they said switch to vista. ...I have switched to Scansoft's PDF Converter Pro ..works!

... for my hp deskjet there are no x64 drivers too - but the standart XP driver works - without much config options... but it works.

Generally speaking for all programs that are rooted deeper in the system you need special x64 versions ...defrag, antivirus, driver

i think the next time i'll install vista64 - i 've done it lately on another comp and the installation was much easier than x64... but there are some programs that doesn't support vista too ...but then you only need to buy the latest version and it should work

Running XP 64 here with no problems. A dual boot system actually. One HD runs Win XP 32 bit, the other HD runs XP 64. I choose which one to run when booting up. Can't work without XP 64.
Crazy Bump works fine, as does everything else. No games, and the box is off line.

I know for sure that adobe PDF printer DOES Work in Windowsx64, at least in version 8, I think that was only a problem with the beta releases and cs2.

I've had x64 since it came out prettymuch. I've had an issue with a canon scanner, but it gave me an excuse to buy a canon lide 600f which works perfectly. Xerox 6180 has x64 drivers, as does most other hardware I've tried except for usb->irda devices. I haven't had any software problems aside from the now ok pdf printing issue, which admittedly was a real downer at the time.

The upside is that on some repeated rendering tests, windows uses up more scratch disk even though I have 4 gb ram, so I can't imagine using MR without access to at least 4gb ram.

Hmm.. opinions differ as much as the weather do from one day to the next about Vista64 and XP64. :) if M$ is planning on stop supporting XP64 then it'll be a dead platform in a couple of years.

Pdf printer hm, that won't be a problem since it's something i have no use of. But sitll good to know. I been reading abuot Outpost firewall and NOD32 for XP64 and they both sppear to work well from what i understand. But there are few choices when it comes to firewalls and antivirus and also trojanscanners.

It looks like most of you guys are running standard XP64 on your machines with relatively few problems, only a couple of daredevils dare to run Vista64 :D it feels a bit like russian roulette to play with Vista64 now, but i don't know yet..

Btw, meanwhile i been testrunning XP64 SP2 in VMWare running under my XP32 installation. Looks like it's working although i only gave 1gbm ram to the VMWare process. :) one more thing.. i made the virtual imagefile 8gb for this installation and it wasn't enough, XP64 must be massive once installed and updated.
