That's one of the good places to pick up the Xeon's, ...
Just Kidding... Things are not so great here in Miami (They over built the whole city and now Architecture firms like mine are suffering)

Forget about the 16 core... I'm glad I still have a job
You should come here Leo... in Luxembourg, at every corner, there is construction going on... so much, it is almost scary...
(but no 3D previz.. no time for that.. hehe... too much to build)

Humans really are just big ants ..... Look for stuff, ...find stuff, ... drag the stuff around , ..... build something with the stuff, ..somebody kicks it(natural disaster), ... find more stuff, ..build it again

The only difference that seems to be is that humans complain, ...and of course, .. are way less efficient.

Your all ants. ....build your little model, ..drag some texture on it, ..build a picture, ... start over. Ants !

Not to be perdantic, but that would be: You're all ants.

he he... and yes we are... or maybe the viruses of the earth... because we destroy more than we construct in fact.. like Mister Aids, or Mister Ebola.. yep destroying the place where we live.....

People used to say...

"Different Day, Same Shit !"

and I dare to say..

"Different Scale, Same Shit !"

(LOL) :D

Even still, ......... The DIY version is cheaper .... ;)
All you penny pinchers  ... 15k is *pocket change*. Snap out of it.

hmm...

where's the golden spot after Your calculations where the's the balance between
• one computer, much power, muchos pesos, one license for each piece of software
and
• multiple computers, not so much power, cheap, many licenses

?
at 2000$ per computer ? at 5000 $? at 10000 ?
what do You calculate per software package of all licenses You use, incl. OS ?

You would calculate a full license, .. in this case $1000 per MW lic.

As far as the comparison, ... I believe the allure of multiple machines quickly erodes after factoring in the extra licenses, multiplication of the power consumption, .. additional hardware, ..maintaining a network, noise, etc.. There's no doubt its more of a PITA. IMO, ... the more you can get under a single hood, .... the better. Now this is strictly profiled for the single CG'er, ..small operation and not meant to be applied to larger entities like arch.firms, animation houses etc... You know what I mean .... for guys like most of us here.

i see...

so i'd be the license, the OS per slave... certainly only if there's noone working on that box... else there'd be more licenses to pay... MUCH more...

but how about future investment. such a box (10000$+) also has an economical lifetime of max. 3 years until newer computers are out for everyone that are faster.
i am a little bit critical concerning monsterbeast computers because they do not have a linear price/performance ratio but exponential. (20% more power costs twice as much with the newest cpus!)

this may be suitable for single users, sure, but even including the 1000$ license per slave with 8 gigs of ram You're just get much more bang per buck... of course with the ass-itch of networking and setup.

how far do Your calculations go ? with power consumption for example... ?

or is it also a personal flavour competing with the economics ?

in which direction would You invest for a multiple artists that even would want to render animations ? would You also recommend «the bigger the better» boxes ?

interesting discussion... ! my dad says the same thing as You ! he likes power horse computers - one system with no more problems like networking and such - i like raw renderpower, scalability and low prices... even though i hate the network setup (never touch it again when it's running ! no internet access for any slave !)
