Awesome as always Tora, the detail in your scenes is impressive. I think the old Kitchen renders remain my favourites, very appealing colors.

@Bubbaloo:
The lighting setup consists of emitter only, so nothing special here except one modifaction: The emitter coming from the left part of the image which is reflected in the metal of the faucet sends its light through a SSS diffusor panel. Thats why you don't see any harsh emitter outlines in the reflection. (rendertimes quadrupled as a sideeffect. :) )

I have tried that method too - it is punishing. You don't like using image mapped emitters to create those soft highlights? What about bouncing the light off a card instead?

Just curious if you've found this to be the better method all around.

Hi Brett,

Well it depends what you are after. The emitter/ softbox combo is for sure the most versatile method. You can quickly change the look of your highlights by moving your emitter or setting your planes translucency to your needs. You'd need a whole lot of different MXI's or HDR's to be that versatile. You also have the benefit of knowing that you did it the correct way- just to soothe your mind a bit when your regard the rendertims. :)
I cannot recommend this method for anyone not having a renderfarm at hand so mapped emitters with a high quality MXI will do the trick in most cases.
I use all the methods you described above from time to time, I use bouncecards rather seldom sometimes a directional grid covering my emitters ( for example in my closup of the faucet in the countryhouse to really punch out the metall features without lighting the rest of the scene) and SSS diffusor planes when I'm crazy and have plenty of time.

regards,

Ben

:)

Thanks - my assumption based on the quality of your work was that you did it that way because it gave the best results, just wanted to be sure.

Yes, certainly a mapped emitter would be more efficient than lighting through an sss material with identical results if done properly. In fact, for a hybrid, you could render out some of those sss emitters as orthographic textures when you had time and then just use them as .mxis on planes... but you knew that.

updated on page one.
Rendering of an existing mansion loacted near stockholm. The owner made some crazy changes to the existing structure like adding a spa area in the basement with a 40m pool which is visible through a hardened glass surface in the living room. Bathroom and kitchen were designed be Boffi, a few walls had to be removed in order to get the massive stone bathtub into place and the base of the house had to be fortified with an 80 tonnes concrete block to prevent the house from collapsing....

@sandykoufax:
The cloth has been done with Maya's fursystem. The initial rendering showed a velvet type of cloth, but I decided later against and rendered the fur in maya scanline to compose it later in photoshop.

Benjamin
