expensive, but if you do a lot of technical pieces.... worth it I think..

they are preparing an automotive series...
Ah cool thanks Hervé!!!

thanks sms :D

I've been working on the wheel casings some more ;- )

I much prefer the studio render. Too me it's like night and day with the quality. Judging by your reflections, it seems like the overhead light might be a little small. Try making it generally rectangular, at least twice as long, and twice as wide as the car, and fairly close to the roof. In some real-world auto photography sets, you'll see the overhead reflector only a few feet above the car, and the camera angle is set so that you can't see the reflector.

ok , maybe I agree with you Dilbert, but a large white rectangle (emitter) is just a large rectangle.. and so you'll never have the subtility of a real large real light.. this is why I suggested an HDRI studio...

The problem with a landscape HDRI is that there is no more light depth info, and all the light coming to the scene is sent from equal distance.. (usually a half sphere) this is why most of time.. the resulting render look somehow strange.. the ones made by HDRI studio are "OK" because they placed their light sources at approx equal distance from the cam (spheron) that captured the... HDRI..

The best way to simulate a real world lighting environment is a modeled HDRI like Vtour does.. it is called Spatial IBL..

and so far there is only on app at the moment..

I'm not sure if you can compare this with Herve's link, but this could also be very interesting.

Check it.
this is a nice thing... but AFAIK, that won't work with Maxwell.. only NL could make such script to work similar in Maxwell..

my 1 cent..

The link above is more interesting to work with Maxwell..

It is about mapping the HDRI image onto a geomtry created form it... so you got all the shadows and refelctions right..

Also, when you are finished modeling and ready to render, fix the camera angle to the perfect shot, and then move the lights to create the best environment lighting. (I think simmsimaging talked about this on his beer bottle tutorial). It's very important to set up the lights for the exact camera angle that you want to shoot. I think that's another danger with using general mapped HDRI's to light a scene, as it's easy to just ignore where the light is coming from when you simply map it spherically. Having the ability to move a light closer or away from your scene is critical for shadow quality, highlight intensity etc..

Thanks so much guys!!!

I'll work on that :)

Good one dilbert!! :)

And some wires, the first one not smoothed second one subdivided and the last one subdivided and smoothed:
