I think you've done it!
Nice improving, not a fail man :)

I think it looks much less realistic now :?

Making a good bump maps is a pain. Try to divide the surface detailing into a bump map and a roughness map.

def: Maybe, i don't know yet but if comparing to the reference photo then it's possible i made it. Thanks :)

Hybaj: I have to be honest and actually agree with you, personally i preferred some of the earlier versions which were not trying to imitate the look and feel of the reference photo. Since i chose the path of working more strictly towards the reference photo look then this piece lost it's charm. Anyhow it's rendering at 1600x1200 now with the above look and i think i leave it at that, i'm sorry.

Bumpmaps themselves aren't that difficult to find or create, but the problem is to choose the correct one's and weight them in properly in your materials so you get the look you're after. It's not easy..

The 1600x1200 version should be done later tonight sometimes, i'll drop it in this thread then i will finally close this wip thread. :)

looking goodd...but i'm afraid i think you're right about the earlier versions. Personally i think it has to do with two things - the original light setup was colder, and the bump/scratch map was finer. If you haven't abandoned the model altogether, I would suggest using a bumpmap with very fine noise and no scratches, since they are in the geometry, and revert to th light setup of the early renders.

Hey Max - looks great to me. If someone hadn't followed this long process and came in cold I think they would not question the reality. Great job.

trofaster: Yeap you're right, the old setup was sexier and so were the scratches.

Brett: Thank you sir :) it's possible it might look ok for someone who never seen it before. Part of why i dislike this piece now is because i got so tired and used to seeing it all the time, to be honest i'm sick of this screwdriver. :D

Anyhow, i wrote above i rendered the 1600x1200 version which i also did and then shutdown the rendering for the night to resume it today. Resuming failed :( and that's why this version is still noisy. And i don't feel like starting over once again. Sucks..
