Tom: Thank you sir! :) and you got the eyes of an eagle, there's a tiny amount of intersection between those two meshes, it's so small i thought no one would notice which is why i didn't fix it hehe. I'm impressed and shall try to fix that in the upcoming update later on..

tokiop: Yes it's kinda closer with higher contrast in those shots :) thank you!

hyltom: Thanks :) the original handle on the real screwdriver is very scratchy, so i made my own interpetation of that on the model. Maybe i went overboard with the scratches. You wanna know something about the steel part, it's actually full of problems that should be fixed if it's gonna be accurate. One thing is the curvature of the sides of the slope at the sharp end of the steel, that's very much inaccurate and wrong and also the tip of the steel itself is wrong so i'm not gonna deny your observations, you're absolutely correct and you got a sharp eye when you see those tiny defects.

Chris: Hehe :D now that can't be good can it.. thanks!

Updated news now..

I haven't yet got started on all those updates i'm gonna do today on this scene but i shall begin with them now, it's alot to do so it's gonna be one very long day (phew!) but one thing at a time i'm sure it'll get better and much more realistic. I might post mini-updates along the way here.. :)

Thanks yet again for all your helpful comments which are both positive and negative, it helps to improve this piece of work even more and also boost my skills another level up.

I haven't touched this in a while, been sick and doing other stuff but now it's alright again and i can resume work on this screwdriver thingy. Sorry about the delay.

A new test here, this is purely based upon the reference photo i shot when i started on this little pet project of mine. This first attempt at matching both the model, background, lighting and materials to the reference turned out ..ok but far from perfect. Some more tweaking could be done.

The reference photo again so it's easier to compare

Nico, thanks! :) but you know i tried to achieve that smooth soft light look on the surface of the plastic and also the caustic type stuff going on below the screwdriver on the paper but i failed at that. :/

Btw, i posted the wrong image in my previous post heh, sorry about that. They both had so similar names i picked the wrong one by mistake. Anyhow here's the correct version i meant to post the first time. :)

Regarding the caustics and shadows of your renference photo, maybe if you made your main light source smaller. Then the shadows would be more distinct and though I'm not sure, maybe the caustic stronger?

Yes you're right Fran, i wanted to avoid messing with the emitters but now i have to if this is ever gonna look anything like the reference. I'll run some more tests with a smaller emitter to boost the caustics look a bit more and also the position of the lightsource.

I'll be back tomorrow with more updates on this.

Thanks

+ if you want to really match the lightning of the photo put some white lamp shade around the emitter.

really a piece of Art Maximus!

In you ref photo, the caustics on the "floor" are blue, though the "absorbance?" color is more clear blue / cyan

Don't know if you noticed that detail, just trying to help

edit : it seems there 's a blue plane emitter at something 16-17h cap'tain!
edit2: and the one for ceiling is a bulb i think, yellowish

Bubba: Yeap true, that yellowish tone is on my tasklist and will be taken care of. :)

Hybaj: Mm, i thought about that aswell but then again it would probably introduce more noise so i haven't yet attempted that. We'll see if i do that.

def: There's a issue with the reference photo i haven't mentioned, it's tone is a bit wrong because i photographed it using my camera's automatic whitebalance which had trouble compensating for the lightbulb's type of light (it's a 45w lowenergy bulb) so the coloring of the shadow/caustics appear more turqoise than green'ish.

Good feedback guys, i'll be taking notes of everything you said and will ofcourse try to improve this piece of work more today. :) updates will as usual be posted along the way.

A smaller update, what been adjusted now are..

- The top lightsources are more yellowish now giving the scene a more yellow look.
- Plastic handle material been tweaked further to have yellow, turqoise (not sure about the spelling) highlights and caustics coloring.
- Lights positions been adjusted some more to make the caustics more visible and to place the shadow of the handle on the paperfloor better.
- Scratchmaps on the handle been swapped for new one's.

I'm now considering remodeling the handle and the steel part again as they're not really accurate enough when compared to my real reference model, it's quite a bit of work to do including all the sculpting but i think it might be worth it to push this scene one step further closer to reality.
