Yeap thanks Brett, that's true the enviroment has a big impact on the final outcome of metal surfaces like this. :) do it in post you say eww no that's not right hehe

And now i decided to call this final, can't mess with this scene much longer or it will never be good enough and it will be yet another of my unfinished wip's posted on this forum. I got it rendering now at 1600x1200 here so it probably won't finish tonight, hopefully sometime tomorrow.. we'll see how noisy it is.

Here's a small sample of it so far after 1h 15min rendertime.

You'll get to see the rest when it's done! :)

Hey, it looks promising! If you want to speed things up, you can send the scene to me and I will render it for you in an hour or so. I'm not rendering at the moment and I have 24 cores at my disposal... :D

Bubba: :) many thanks, but you know i noticed one thing missing.. probably not the only one but one important thing for this scene to look somewhat correct. And that is depth of field. There's non in this scene and i think it ruins it :( so i have to try to fix that tomorrow and then re-render it once again :/ *sigh*

jc4d:  thank you so much, i appreciate your kind words. Hard work and dedication to the job is all part of the fun creating this. :)

Brett: Thank you sir! :)

4 Hero: :) thanks!

I'll re-render this tomorrow as i wrote above, and that time with dof so the screwdriver in the back gets blurred out and it will look better and more realistic considering the scale and all that..

You could make the lighting a bit more interesting if you move one of the emitters (the main one) closer to the objects, almost so it's just out of camera view. It will make nice strong lighting on one side and more defined shadows. A little contrast in lighting is always good if you want something to look interesting :)

The scratches look a bit too even over the surface, it would help I think to fade them out in places.

Mihai: All good suggestions, i'll try to improve on the lighting more tomorrow before i hit the renderbutton again. However the mapping is something i doubt i'll work more on, sorry.

I understand you can see some repeating in the scratches and that ruins it this picture and maybe when i learnt more i can do this better with tailormade maps for objects, something which isn't there now.

In this version all objects are just boxmapped, there are no specially made UV maps for them. That probably explains the weirdness you're seeing in the mappings now. Because of the boxmapping i can't do much about the maps unless ofcourse i retouch the scratchmaps themselves before applying them.

[Edit] : I played a bit adjusting the current lights intensities and it turned out like this...

Very nice! Btw, is the tip of the rightmost one penetrating to the handle of the other?

The contrast in the last variations look much like your refs! Congrats Max!

These two last rendering are very very nice Max. This green plastic is wonderful, may be a little bit too much scratch... but the overall is WOW! 8)
My only critic will go to the shape of the screw driver. It's hard to explain, but for me the shaft doesn't looks correct. This is mainly due to the plastic and its shrinkage properties. Check carefully the profile of the handle in your ref picture and compare it with your 3D and you will understand what i mean...i hope. Anyway, it's a small detail that bother my designer's eyes, maybe nobody will notice that.
Congrats again for you amazing works!
