It seems you are having fun with the sculpting brushes! And it pays...great stuff: the look of the plastic is perfect, i could almost feel it under my fingers...
...whooops, until today i used to say things like these only to my girlfriend via skype...

Hervé: Hehe yeah :D i didn't think of that but good suggestion. I might implement that ..soon.

Mattia: Now how did you know that i played with the sculpt brushes :P so you're talking about screwdrivers with your girlfriend :D probably not these types of screwdrivers hehe

Brett: Many thanks for your kind words about my humble piece of work :) and you're right, this isn't finished by my standards. Not until it's perfect or as close as perfect as i can get it, then it's done. Maybe soon it'll be worth posting in the main Gallery section on the forum.

On this latest update i been adjusting the steel part to look and behave better in the scene and also tweaked the bumpmapped scratches on the plastic handles, their tile size has been reduced so now it tiles about 0,278 times which makes the scratches appear bigger and more clearly visible on the surface. And i also added one more screwdriver for fun just to try to push my system to it's limits and i squeezed it up to 2,4 million polys now in this scene :) ..it rendered for about 4 hours.

[Edit] : I added one with a bit more contrast in it below :)

Very nice Max. I'd give it just a bit more contrast/snap to make it sparkle a bit more as a shot, but otherwise it looks done to me. :)

Nice bit of work.

Great plastic handle material Max!
Although I must confess the metal is not alright, it looks like a painted carton.

Impressive Max ....

If you share the material, ..that'd be great. ;)

Brett: Thanks! :) i added one with more contrast above, some simulensing on this would probably enhance it a bit more :) i'll try that once everything's done.

Tom: Thank you :D but i will have to agree with you about the steel, it's not looking quite alright just yet. I'll probably start over from scratch with that material. It went overboard a couple of versions ago.. btw, i included a new macro reference photo of it below. It's actually quite dull looking in real life, not at all very reflective but i boost it's reflectivity and shinyness some more.

Chris: Thanks :) but ofcourse i share the material, or maybe i sell it.. :P

It looks like your steel mesh needs visible round bevels to catch more specularity. ;)

Here's a quick 10 min test where i removed the handles and only rendered the steel parts with the exact same lighting conditions as the rendering above. Note that the steel does actually reflect quite alot but it's all diffuse reflections so it's pretty accurate to the real thing. And there are small round bevels on the edges, although one could say they may be a bit to small... :)

Basically what i can see based on this is that the lighting setup needs to change to boost the metallic look of the steel thingy's.

I think you are right - reflective objects in a relatively flat grey environment will look flat and grey. A harder light somewhere in there would probably pick up some nice highlighting.

I'd do it in post, but that's just me ;)

Nice job - and nice update with the added contrast.

So, is this a known issue?
