This is a texture test and not the final scene but I like to get some feed back on it anyway. The bump on the back wall got out of hand. I'm changing the pot surface and would like to get more gloss out of the floor. Am also adding bark chips to the tree trunk for more realism. Lighting is HDRI and could use more drama I think.
All comments appreciated...
Cheers, Ron

Very good start IMO. I agree with all your proposed directions. I'd add that I'm not really feeling much texture in the floor or the carpet, they feel a bit like painted elements.

For the lighting; soft indirect lighting might be nice but will not really add drama. You need harder/more direct lighting for drama I think. I'd consider adding a window-like emitter that reflects in the table top and floor as a way of adding lighting and drama and accenting your surfaces.

Very nice in any case.

Thanks for your comments!

The mat is a real puzzle, the woven part is actually geometry. I built it because in tests it looked flat...but it doesn't read at all at this distance...frustrating. Maybe it should be a bit thicker to get more shadow.
I should also model the floor boards.

For sure it will be harder to tell at the scale, but if you have the geometry there then increasing the contrast of your lighting will probably help a lot. Maybe add some bump to it as well to bring out micro-detail at a distance? You may need to tweak the ND or the roughness of the material so that it doesn't reflect as broad an angle of light too. In any case; someone with more material experience would be able to help more than I.

Looking nice. A harder light would do great to give some volume to the scene, including that incredible mat detail; it has volume but does not show. Now the light is a bit dull.

Great job!

Thanks again for your comments and suggestions. I am rendering it now, will take a few hours and I will post it.

Hi Ron,

I think you have done an outstanding job on modeling and texturing the bonsai tree and pot… they look great. I have to agree with the comments already made about the quality of the light being a little on the soft side…. a harder light would bring out the detail in a more dramatic fashion. Aside from the lighting there were several things, which stood out for me when I first looked at your image. The first, which has already been commented on by others, is the wood floor texture. I think the dark gap between the boards detracts from the overall harmony of the image. The second is the flatness of the mat and fabric banding, which has also been commented on by others. The last is the placement of the Japanese print ,which seems out of place. In my opinion a hanging scroll might be a better option. I’m looking forward to seeing your updated render…. Great work.

Joedex,

Thanks for your comments and the Modo forum link. That is truly awe inspiring work...my puny little effort sort of pales by comparison. But we all contribute what we can and hopefully learn in the process.

Cheers, Ron

really nice Ron... maybe jitter the geometry of the wooven a little bit.. and maybe more spec...

Hi Ron,

By adding the link to Cristobal Vila’s web site and his Japanese garden project I was, in my minds eye, thinking about it as a good example of how a harder light source would bring out the detail in a more dramatic manner…. It was never my intention to compare / contrast your work to his or imply in any way a qualitative comparison. Sorry if it came across like that….

So, is this a known issue?
