Love the execution, Curt, but I think that size mesh will kill your scale. I was thinking that sort of pattern, only maybe 1/10 it's size.. it should look very dense, almost solid, to sell the scale, even at distances.

maybe not a mesh in that kind of that but only some vertical elements ... or a metal plate with some holes in it
