does anyone have opinions about the Xeon E5310 vs Q6600? I am looking into building a new machine and have only built xeon workstations but with the new 4 core desktop processors I became curious.

Well first and foremost Xeon is ready for multiprocessor systems whereas the q6600 is for single processor desktop systems.
Other than that - i think the q6600 is cheaper and more performant.... but thats not in my expertise.

I guess that's my question. I can't seem to find any websites that compare any xeon chips to the q6600 and that lot. I just picked the e5310 because the price is comparable.

the Q6600 in cinebench top at 1420 points , that make it quite close to the "old xeon 5160" in the mac pro quad config

remember that the mac pro octo ( xeon 5365 ) tops at 2300-2400

the 53xx xeons are for multi processor use on socket 771 boards. the 32xx xeons are for socket 775 and single proc only.
socket 771 means more expensive and FBDIMM. if you compare prices you should also look at the frequency: q6600 has 2,4ghz - E5310 only 1,6ghz. the comparable xeon is the x3220 (socket 775) - same performance as q6600. maybe the xeon needs a little lower voltage for the same clock speed.

We have a renderbenchmark on our homepage.
A dual xeon 5355 2,66 system renders twice as fast as a single Q6600 2,4 meaning that pr. processor the Q6600 is just as fast as the very top xeon model, giving you at least double up in your dollar/renderpower investment even if you will have to build up twice as many computers..

I've been recently looking into getting a dual-quad setup with the Q6600 (now the price has dropped it looks pretty feasible!) Any suggestions on mobo's? I'm having trouble finding anything suitable.

That's because there is nothing suitable. You have to go to xeons for octo machines.

the xeon 5355 is $1440Can vs. $324 for the 6600. Ok, so lemme see, once you factor in the 'consumer' RAM and mobo prices... one could build four or maybe even FIVE complete 6600 machines for about the same price as a single complete dual proc/dual core Xeon. Machine.

Of course the sticky wicket is that in maxwell's case machines burn up license. So there is a limit to this money saving machine cloning. hehe

If you can live with having several machines... the 6600 is the road to cheap render power...
