Many times criticized, the rating system is becoming every day less credible. In the last period, I had some healthy problems in my family, and I published only few materials. My rating passed from over 6.50 to 5.67, and any new published material received a long series of 0 and 1 rates. From more than 15 materials in the first 20, now the better one is maybe at 50th position. Many new materials, good or not, receives exaggerate votes at least at the beginning. That’s Ok. But seeing a colleague receiving about 400 votes in one day, seems really too much…. I definitely think that this rating system is becoming – at least to me – a reason to not publish materials, instead of a positive stimulus, like it should be, especially for newcomers. From my personal point of view, it is really time to change or remove ratings at all. What do you think?

I agree. Artaud is getting hosed on that by someone. I really think it would be simplest if the votes were connected directly to user names. If you have the stones to cast a vote, then have the stones to stand behind it. I'm not a fan of secret ballots - as you may be able to tell ;)

The positive reasons for a rating system should greatly out weigh the negative side but, I do not believe that is the case with this system. There have been others who have had similar experiences and perhaps NL will reconsider the rating system. Thanks for your contributions Artaud and, for my sake, being the eternal noob, I hope you will continue sharing your materials.

Once I post a material I don't really care about the rating. I just hope people find it useful. I do believe that somehow there are those that are cheating to win the monthly prize, though, which is too bad. Too bad there are those with low personal integrity. I like the idea of being able to see what people voted except... I can image instances where people will get hounded and pm'ed because of low votes they gave even if they were expressing their true opinion.

You can ofcourse be smart and just ignore whatever ratings people give your materials, ratings are only a number of no real meaning. What means more is word of mouth on the forum from users who are satisfied with your creations and who use them in their renderings. That's a much better reward than a silly number on a webpage.

So for your own good don't pay to much attention to those ratings, it's for people who think a higher rating makes them a better artists. :D

For sure I will continue to share my materials, exchange opinions and suggestion in the forum, and live in this community, this was not in discussion. I am happy to be here and very happy to meet so many enthusiastic young people. I was only telling that 400 votes in a day do have a signification.

Yes- it signifies that perhaps someone has some insecurity issues? :)

I don't know who that is - didn't look on the mxm page - but I can guess. I wouldn't worry about it affecting the contests though - as far as I know NL doesn't use the ratings to make their decisions.

I agree that the ratings don't *have* to mean much, but it would be nice if they did. When you have 20 different plastics on there it helps to see which might actually be better without having to grab them all.

I am not worried about the contest at all. I do not like contests, and I prefer to publish other materials rather than being anxious to win or not something. I would publish just one or two materials for the contest, just to take part in it!
