if it's worth it you have to decide for yourself - i would say yes, it's always if you do it right and get a stable system. the fastest chips of a series are overproportional high expensive. and with overclocking you can go further.

examples from the benchwell list:
core2duo@2.4ghz ~48min
core2duo@ 3.15ghz ~35min
that's ~27% faster with ~30% overclocking

the current intel chips are good for a stable overclock of 20-100% - depends on the model and ghz you start from. the best chips for ocing are normaly the lower ones of a series.
every e6600 (2,4ghz) should easily do 2,8-3ghz - even with the stock cooler.
with better cooling 3,2-3,6ghz is not far away. but you should always watch your temps.

Thats good to know..

However I have a Dell computer , and i have read that it isn't advisable to overclock.. the processor on one of these as it can become unstabe.. and even the bios may be blocked for the settings... have you heard anything like this....

did you checked the bios for overclock setting?
if you can't change it in bios you could try to raise ths fsb in windows using clockgen.
but you need to know which clockgenerator is used on your mainboard.
here is a list of the supported pll's

clockgen in windows doesn't allow to change the vcore - so you can go as far as the stock voltage is enough.
and alwys watch your temps with coretemp - if this is working with dell boards...
