I was able to download the OSX version at home, but no luck yet with the PC version so I haven't gotten a chance to try it but I can't wait... I must know...

Is Network Rendering working accross platforms???

Gold star to the first to try it. Bonus points and a cookie to the first to create the MXS on a Mac and render on a farm of PCs and Linux, then merge the MXIs!

Cheers,

D

Yes dyarza, it is working.
To know more details about network rendering news you can check the manual.

Excellent!

I finally have all three versions downloaded, I'll be trying it out soon!

Thanks,

we have to write down all rules here how to get it working properly.

i have no more problems with pc/pc coop, but cross-coop just does not work after hours and hours of testing.

i work with textures in unc format, like:
//computername/folder/texture.pic
every used .mxm has these exact paths saved. but they should be readable from a mac...

* * *

either way (manager on mac or pc) i can not get them working together. it must be the problem that my mac does not find the textures because they are on a shared folder on a pc.

i can start a render with merging of two pcs with the manager on my mac.

were You lucky ?

To make sure you can try to do a single render (no network) specifying scene and bitmaps in a remote path.

hey !

beatriz is a beautiful name... (i remember a girl called beatriz, .... *rrrrrr* :D )

* * *

IMPORTANT question:
does maxwell also search for textures in the subfolders of a specified bitmap-path or does it think ALL the textures must be in this exact folder ?

because i have them NOT in one dir, but organized in many folders by material type and name. if maxwell searched thru the subfolders, this would be not problem...
seeing maxwell crash tells me that it does not find the textures and thus has not searched the subfolders.

* * *

even nloffice.mxs from my shared folder crashes my mxcl on my mac even though it has no textures in the shaders ... (i tried that remote render You mentioned, beatriz, no success)

mmmm
I should check that with developers before answering.

So looks like not a network problem but a mac "searching the bitmaps" problem.
Weird... which is your config?

OS mainly

ah, OS.

manager/server: MacBook (intel) laptop: OS 10.4.9
server: PC with shared folder, win xp 32
server: win xp 64
server win xp 32

all computers: no firewalls or deactivated (should not be a problem cos all servers are seen)

mac:
- personal file sharing active
- windows sharing active

* * *

maybe You could post the office setup and a step-by-step list ?

* * *

i'll re-try now with the textures all in one special bitmap-folder that i'll specify, to see if this works, but i'd like to underline that it'd be cool that the mac finds the textures itself...
:wink:

my last tests crashed already at the scene selection (hit open --> crash)
i'll post the results.

I'm trying to set up my network rendering with OSX as the server/manager and adding a job from my XP machine. I've got the mxs file stored on the OSX machine, but when I try to add it from XP, it always says the file doesn't exist. I'm trying using //computer-name/folder/file.mxs . How do I set it up on the mac so I can add jobs from a PC? I tried using Windows sharing and mapping a drive to the mac, but it warns me that it's a local file, and the render fails, the mac can't find the mxs file.

does Your pc see the mac as server ?

ok, here's another succesful test we've made:

MANAGER/SERVER/DISPLAY:
Mac Pro 2.66 GHz standard config osx 10.4.9 2GB RAM

SERVERS:
Intel Core 2CPU 6600@ 2.40 gHz 4 GB RAM Win XP64 & MW64bits
Intel Core 2CPU 6400@ 2.13 gHz 4 GB RAM Win XP32
Intel Xeon 5160@3.00 Ghz 8 GB RAM Win Xp64 & MW32 bits

The scene was in a different PC and textures as well (Pack ang Go function used).

Does it help?

thanks for the efforts !

i'll try that pack and go function.

Am I correct in thinking that the pack and go function places all related files in one place?

I guess that it would then work, but if you have textures in different folders it might have trouble with the paths.

I too have my materials organized by subfolders in a network location accessible to all the servers, but I keep all texture maps in the same folder, so the MXM files reference a certain path, it is just going to take me a bit to figure out how to make that location look the same to all the machines. I was thinking of placing everything on a shader IP hard drive, hopefully then my paths can just be //ip/folder from any platform.
