Thank god i managed to escaped from the Orkney Islands in '46, those bastards were on my tail.
I just read a cool article about 'scapa flow' in '39... Never knew anything about this part of the world before - it was quite a story!

1/4 mile down the beach road from my house, there's still the rusting remains of the anti-submarine nets that used to span Eynhallow Sound [a 1/2mile stretch of water between Rousay and Evie] looks like the cast off chainmail-shirt of some 200ft tall giant.

truly a mad day........don't know if I need a shite or a haircut....

Ay! Well, think about the poor bastards on the battleship that was sunk in '39 - it's hulk is a registered war grave. The u-boat snuck in at high tide on a moonless night, jogged it's way through the sunken ships meant to keep them out. I'm not sure if this will cheer you up or not :?:

news flash:

oh it's getting better.
I got the changes done and hosted a new wmv for download on my ftp site..........their I.T guys dragged it across to their client server...........but!.........the 62mb file now looks like 22mb and I think they've only got part of the file LMAO again........there's no way they've checked it.
Their client is in Milan and presenting it to the board in the morning.......he's gonna be pissed about halfway through the presentation......my client? they've all gone home and know nothing..

so..........I'm hacking into their server to correct their f**k-ups........that's just the sort of nice guy I am.

You’re very nice because this is obviously their fault, I think I would send an e-mail telling them what's going on but I'd leave it up to them to fix it. I'm surprised they are that incompetent and are able to stay in business.

It's their project manager I feel sorry for, she's a real star and great at her job........but beset by internal I.T problems and constant changes from the design dept.........her focus is based around delivering on time, on budget and she's done a great job getting it this far under very stressful circumstances.
Oh well, it's better being lucky than good.....I've fixed it, I hope it gets appreciated. :)

You should at least let the person who sends you the money know what you've had to put up with and do in order to deliver what they asked for. Like I said your a very nice person.

There should be a single website where all new clients can be directed to that demonstrates a quick, but comprehensive view of what exactly happens behind the scenes of any CG work -- be it stills or animations.

...and it should be made a pre-requisitie viewing before any work can begin, ..or simply we have no deal. :P
I'm with you big man. :)

For sure Aitraaz, I bet it'd make hilarious reading!!

To get serious here, what many clients need to understand is that requestes for desired file formats and preferred 'compression routines' are vitally important requests...........which is why they're asked for at the very beginning of each project and chased up on constantly throughout the lifespan of a project. Without that, you're left pissing in the wind.

I hear this phrase so often: "but don't you just have to...."

The word just implies that no matter what the request is it should only take about 5 minutes and shouldn't result in an upcharge.

Dunno, there seems to be plenty of supposed CG artist fanning the flames though.

When I first started out on my own I used to visit freelancer sites like guru.com and such. I'd laugh when people would post projects like: "We need a 3 minute walkthrough animation going through a new office building. Turn around 3 days. Budget $300.00" Then you'd have idiots actually bidding on these projects for less than $300.00 I mean WTF!

I think this has led the inevitable conversation with prospective clients when you give them a bid and they go ape-shit saying things like "That's an outrageous price! All we want is a 'simple' animation. We've had animations done for less than that in the past."

To which I respond,"No no no, you've probably had really shitty animations done for less in the past. There is a difference."

Maybe that's why I don't get much animation work

I'm not technically in the cg business but it's the same in id and de. People want to pass the buck, they want you to make up for their lost production time and their unreasonable budget etc. I have a simple system - I don't quote on things that are unquotable (ie. with unknown unknowables) - I estimate only and fortunately, most of my clients are long term and stopped asking years ago - so it's the ideal scenario. They know I can do the work and they know from past experience about what it's going to cost in at least general terms. For me, I love being able to 'quote' when the job is finished and I'm writing my invoice, for these quotes are always perfect.:)

Which reminds me of the age old saying, ....

Long after the sweetness of low price is gone, ....the bitterness of poor quality remains.
Worth repeating .... ;) ...you get what you give. ...usually.
