Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

…do you feel like your head is about to explode??

This is not meant as a bragging thread, rather a discussion on techniques/tips for maintaining proficiency with multiple programs (that usually have differing commands/keyboard shortcuts/etc.) and maybe wishes??

I for one know (design-related):
  • AutoCAD (professionally since R12, currently on 2008)
    Rhino
Maya (not as well as I'd like so maybe it shouldn't be on this list)
    3D Studio MAX/Viz (though I haven't used it in a while)
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    InDesign
    Fontographer
    Dreamweaver
I have a feeling there are others, but I can't remember :D

I'm currently learning Revit and I'm going crazy because it uses the CTRL key to add to selections instead of the SHIFT key like just about every other program in existence.

How many of you find yourself wishing for a unified interface that uses the same commands (keyboard shortcuts) for whatever program you want to use (and treats the said programs as plugins instead of disparate entities)??

How many of you have found yourself walking across the street, planning your movements out in AutoCAD commands (or some other program)??

the rest of this comment will be in defpointsyeah I'm bored

I know EXACTLY the feeling Lebbeus. I almost tore my hair out switching to Revit, but now after a few years I can't imagine going back.

I find the hardest switches for me are between Autodesk apps, and Adobe apps. especially with their different handling of zooming and panning.

Totally--I keep trying to use CTRL+Space to zoom…a real pain when you're in the middle of a command

This may be a really dumb question, but don't these programs allow you to re-assign keys...? In the "old days" we'd use ansi.sys in a config.sys file.

Or maybe this would help: http://www.goheer.com/products/shortcuts/
