Hello,

I use a Q6600 now and ask me, which temperatures are normal and which are good for overclocking. I meassure per tool Core Temp 0.95:

idle 42/43/38/39°
full load ~58..62°

This are the temperatures for overclocking at 2.7GHz (standard 2.4GHz). Can a Q6600 destroyed by a long term use at high temperature or is a temperature deactivation integrated?

58 seems a little high....not much, but a bit high. Are you using the stock fan and heatsink?

I use a Zalman CNPS9500, but not at full speed, because I hope to keep the system quiet. Also it seems to be, that a higher speed dosn't decrease the temperature so much, only one or two degree.

hmmm, thats weird - i run an qx6700 @ 2.9Ghz with a Zalman CNPS9700, and it never goes above 43°C at full load - have you got room enough around the machine?

Interesting. I will move the machine in the free room and test it.

How did you measure the temp? For example speedfan show me 52° and Core Temp 60°. Maybe we use different tools.

Personally I'd tend to trust the CoreTemp reading (I think it hooks directly into the on-chip temp sensor). I might be completely wrong though...

I found this after a quick Google. They're maximum case temperatures, which might be slightly lower than core temperatures.

Go to the manufacturers web site and down load the data sheet for the component... look at the graphs and see what they say... why mess around?

I use speedfan as well, so it can't be that. Maybe it's the cooler - I Don't no how big the difference between the Zalman 9500 & 9700.

On the Qx6700 the max advised temperature from Intel was 65° C, but they tend to be VERY conservative so I don't think 60° should be a problem.

you should only trust the temps displayed by coretemp ( http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ ) - speedfan or other tools only show the temp of the external temp diode. this temp can be ~10° - 15° lower than the real coretemp and often varies in dependency of the bios version.
the 65°c in the intel specs is the max casetemp. don't know why intel shows this value. the max coretemp is higher. i don't know it excactly but it should be around 85° as it is for the conroes or even higher - a conroe normally begins to throttle when the temp reaches 85°c.

65°c load is normal for a slightly oced q6600 with air cooling, i think it's ok - if it is running stable. is this with stock voltage?
did you get this temp running maxwell or are you using a stress tool like orthos prime?
for me with maxwell the temps are ~5-10° lower than with prime cpu stress test (oced e6600)

Thank you guys, now I understand an other effect too: if I start my system, than speedfan show me ~20° for a long time, but CoreTemp jump to 42° from the beginning. It's case temperature vs. core temp. Also the cooler is very cool allways. I suppose so, the thermal restistor between core and CPU case dosn't allow to get extrem low core temps in any case.

I set the CPU voltage manualy back to standard value 1.275V at the BIOS. So, I hope to get less heat than in automatic mode. The system works stable. My temperatures are render temps, no stress tool tests.

My observation is, that the temp increase during some hours of work. I think, the problem is, that the CPU cooler dosn't transport the warm air outside the PC case. If I use a open case, the temperature is lower. I will buildin a tube, that bring the air from the CPU fan to the chassis fan.

My previous used E6600 was working with 42° speedfan case temp at 2.9GHz, so now it seems to be approx. the same temps again.

Yeah, you're very safe there. As long as you keep low voltages, there's hardly and risk in running high clockrates and temperatures due to protection mechanisms. High voltage and high temperatures are a dangerous combination though.

I build a soft rubber tube around the Zalman, so that the air flow direct to the chassis fan and the cooler ribs create less noise. Now, at lowest speed, the idle chip case temp is 21°...24°. That's much cooler than at my previous E6600 (idle ~35°). Great. And at full load I get ~41°.

... and the system is wonderful quiet. I never had thought, that I can upgrade from an overclocked E6600 to an overclocked Q6600 at the same low noise level. The upgrade doubled the render speed. :D

Hi guys,

can anyone owning a QX6700 tell me what temperature they get with coretemp?
I use the Scythe Infinity to cool it but I find that my temps are a little high (54-52-48-48 idle and nearly 70°C at full load) Room temp is around 19C.
Default speed and voltage. I overclocked it at 3ghz for a while but had to go back to stock settings with the sunnys days and high room temp (25-27°C)...

Do you think it's running too hot?
However as soon as I stop the consuming process, like a render, the temps drop back very quick to iddle temp. (does it mean the cooler is doing his job well?)

I think temps over 60 are high.
When my C2D @3080 is 62C and higher it gives errors and failure sometimes, so i have to look for good cooling system..
