let's say i have a dual xeon quadcore system,
don't i need the amount of memory i use
in a single core system (for instance 4GB)
for each of the Xeon cores (= 2x4 cores x 4GB = 32GB) (!!)
and to handle that, which operating system crunches t h a t ?
linux only? XP 64Bit ?

No .... The board will have a minimum amount of ram specfied for it to run.
In my case that's 512MB(intel workstation). If your running Linux or any Win64 bit OS then you can (depending on the motherboard) have anywhere from 8GB(typically) on up to crazy memory ....., but you don't have to have 2GB or any particular amount per core. Who told you that ? But with that said, ....it's does improve performance to have more ram per slot than just having one large stick in the first slot or dimm.

** Read the MB manual when populating the ram slots for specific details and a visit to their website for approved types of ram before you buy is also a good idea.

Look at the first page of this thread and you'll see the amounts of ram people are using. At the top there are 2 identical systems(xeon 8 cores) one with 4GB's and the other 8GB's. There's a slight performance difference, .....you can see it on the chart. The 8GB machine is a couple of minutes faster.

.....by the way, the xeon quadcore boards require FB dimms and they're pretty expensive.

$330-400 per 2GB x 16 = gulp !! ......

if the amount of memory was per cpu/ core...

and: nobody told me that one needs to have 2GB per cpu.
But:
I just found that when I topped up the memory of
my P4/ 3GHz (desktopCPU) Notebook from 512MB (pain) to 2GB -
WOW! I can tell you, it was such a soothing performance
boost! loved that.
So I kind of interpolated that finding to any machine
(anybody should have the chance to have at least 2GB )

Yes .... you will notice a huge difference going from 512 > 2GB's on that machine because when you were just using the 512, Windows was using the paging file a lot(a lot lot) (writing to the hardrive as memory versus actual ram) .....so, ...that's a lot slower.

I am sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place but it seems logical to me. I have just ran the speed test v1.1 on my Pentium 4 HT 3.0Ghz with 2 GB ram and it took 3h20m with benchmark 32.40

Now I want to buy a new PC but have a budget. Obviously it would be dual core but which intel chipset would you recommend ?

Budget maybe £600 uk sterling $1200

In that case the Intel Core 2 Duo series, you can overclock them pretty well too. I don't think you will have enought for a QX6700, the processor alone would take up the entire budget.

OK, my BOXX was delivered today, and I just ran the speedtest.

CPU: Dual Quad-Core Xeon X5355 2.66 GHz
Cores: 8
RAM: 4 GB
OS: XP64
Time: 21:37
Bench: 305.45

This is a huge increase from my previous PC which rendered the speed test in 110 minutes. Just loving it!!

QX6700 is for a single socket desktop board(4cores) and the Xeon's can be used in a dual scenario workstation or server board(8cores).
