Malware and Virusscanners having a shootout in the background?
Actually the only reason for a sudden performance loss is software which takes processor time - monitor that.

My old Xeon workstation (2 x 3.0Ghz hyperthreading) has recently dropped to around 75% of its former speed. Seems like the CPUs are overheating during a render and then throttling back (opening the window on a cold night increases the speed immediately and noticeably).

After you've been through the obvious stuff (opening Task Manager and checking CPU usage when you think the machine is idle), take a look at all the fans and check they're not clogged with dust.

If you suspect it's heat, also have a look to make sure the CPU cooler is seated well on the CPU. If that gets knocked off even slightly, the chip can overheat, although in my experience, the whole thing just shuts down then.

I had a problem with the IDE buss master, my drive used PIO instead of DMA transfer mode.

Have a look if that may be the problem for you.
(its in "device manager" under the category "IDE ata atapi controllers")
