Early days, but here's some preliminaries for a conversion I'm working on with a builder mate of mine [Alec]........The brief is 'millionaires batchelor pad on a shoestring' so we'll be doing a lot of beg, borrow and stealing.


I'd prefer to go with the wood, but 'big Alec' is pulling Rousay flags out of the ground right now, they're free and we haven't got much of a budget........
These just the early light-plots...........phys-sky great for this now the co-ordinates are in. We're doing the design-build & construction, I've got a lot of mortar to mix soon.

You can't tell from the photos, but on a clear day the views are amazing.

you got the scale of the chair wrong if I compare the photos and the renders...

but the scene looks nice and the house is really great from the outside. I like the structure. But it doesn't look very big.

That blue jacket material is excellent, not to mention the dacaying green moss interior wall. The ladder on the ground and the pile of dirt are nice touches too... oh, wait!

Ah Francis, that looks about right. although jackets are definately required the weather we're having right now.

Thanks macray, the chair's actually correct but the photos give a deceptive impression...also the low roof beams don't help, and these are being replaced with bracing higher up......lot of work!

Stage two is building an additional wing off the side, but we're not there yet.

this surely will do some good to the space. i hope the high braces can bear the tension effected by the weight of the stone roof on that kind of roof structure.. did you / your builder recheck the structural layout? the low brace takes all the tension (red). with the high brace, the tension adds stress to the rafter up to the joint with the new brace, where there will be quite some bending stress.. and there will be some tension at the base - probably peanuts for those bunker walls.

Thanks Dexel, yes we're planning to keep the build as sympathetic to the location as possible............on the braces, I've got to do the maths next week and see just how much height we can get away with, but yes those exterior walls are pretty thick.

Thats cool. I'm really into this kind of thing as my parents live out in the oooo arrrr Cotswolds farmlands and renovate buildings like this. Maybe I could visualise some of their places.
