d7mcfc,

try to see it as a blessing in disguise (although it may not look like it at the moment)

I did the same as the Pixel Artist and jumped before I was pushed, that was last year and so far so good...

Getting clients is definately the hard part (although gettin ghtem to pay on time is harder!) but I left my previous company on good terms and they were my first client! (and I've done several jobs for them since.) A very unexpected place I've got clients from is monster.co.uk ! It's a job search site but I've had agencies and a couple of clients contact me because of my CV posted there - worth a try...

Good luck.

Once again, I have to thank you all for your wishes and help. It means a lot.

Today has been an unusual day, I have a stay of execution from work, but I think inevitably I will be leaving, whether it be by myself or being pushed in the very near future.

You people never fail to impress me!

Ta very much.

Hi d7mcfc,

... go for it... :D .... you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.... and they will probably realise that the can't manage without you...... then you can charge them freelance rates :D (from experience  )

Good luck.

Glad there's a stay of execution :)
A good time to back-up those contacts, pull your portfolio together and start putting out feelers..........going freelance was the best thing I ever did, should have done it a lot sooner. :)

I went freelance with no experience. Starved for 3 months, but now i've got too much work/pressure. Think I might go back to working in Tesco's.

The Pixel Artist wrote:Hi there d7mcfc, truly sorry to hear of your situation. And boy does that sound familiar, too.

I went freelance for basically the same reason. The architectural firm I was a designer for was starting to have money problems and I knew it wouldn't be long before they'd have to let me go. I also decided to get the jump on them a take the risk to go freelance, and very happy I did. It was definitely hard going the first couple of years, but again, it was so worth it in the end (if that helps any).

FYI, your timing might be pretty good here, as I'm going to start outsourcing some of my modeling work and will be looking for some quality freelancers. I've got quite a bit of stuff needing to be worked on, mostly large residential house (8000 to 40000+ SF monsters), and of course with a lot of detail. Looking at some of your work here you look like you've got a good eye for detail (which I find very important). So you could be the right person for this.

Here's a couple example of basically what I'm looking for...

Here's one I've started on this last week (the 40,000 SF monster, lord help me...)

P.S. Anyone else interested, please feel free to contact me as well. I am also looking for full time help if anyone happens to live in the west suburbs area of Chicago (or interested in moving there). 3D modeling/illustration and also web/java/flash development person. (sorry, kind of hijacking your thread there a bit)
there must be a mistake.... there is no such a thing as a 40,000 sq.ft "single family home"!!

I imagine that is total construction... howmuch sq.ft. it is under-air?
