regarding the gold issue. I've had similar problems myself. The fix usually is to check the image being used for a background/HDRI. In many cases the aspect is incorrect and environment being reflected is actually distorted. Worst case, one can always do it the old fashion way with a sphere and a good panorama mapped to it.
Another point. put objects or glowing 2D cutouts of images off-camera. Unless those two cups are the only thing in sight. Put a cup, a spoon, other props that will be reflected in the target object and will add that last 1%. Where experienced and eagle-eyed people will look.
