u.big listed a great set of alpha pics.
This one seems to best show how light in shadow areas is better:

This shows it well too: (Makes me want to go back to Alpha right away!)

now that I'm looking their are ton of examples: (Looking down the corridor at my local mall has the EXACT same lighting I'd expect from this structure)
My mind comes alive with this image and reminds me of why I bought M~R.

just go to the gallery section all the way to the last page and start looking. Those are all alpha.

and You guys are sure that this vivid light can not be achieved by the turbulence and water settings in the sky model ? or by placing the object nearer to the aequatorial degrees, meaning more south ?

these pictures look very greek ! fantastic light, yes... !

This is a debate that is extremely hard to quantify because you’re dealing with peoples perceptions instead of hard facts. I think it's generally accepted that the Alpha/Beta versions of Maxwell produced more pleasing results but as to what made them different than what we're currently using is something only NL can answer. Since we don't seem to have this quality any longer I'd say that either they don't know how they did it or the current engine isn't capable of delivering the same quality.

water setting in maxwell v1.1 has no effect on sky render

only turbidity and ozone have an effect...

This is something Ive posted in the bugs secton as of v1.0 and it was never fixed for 1.1.. I really hope thye redo the sky rettings/model because I feel it is obsolete .. like mental ray's new physical sky has setting that as very nice to have when rendering sky. .such as blue/red shift the abliity to change the color of the gradiretn as it approaches the goruns.. the haze factor.. and saturation intensity.. all very simple things which we cant control in M~R..

A saying I like:

God is like the wind. I can't see him but I can see his effects on the trees and life.

Another way to examine the changes from Alpha/Beta to RC/and on are the amount of people excitedly creating images in this forum.

Yes the Mental Ray's psychical sky is great. I always wanted such control since I started working with Maxwell since the beta. I mean it takes a single afternoon to code majority of the needed features. But it woudln't suprise me if the sky stayed the same even in the forthcoming 1.2. NL follows its own secret plan :)
