Well, I was playing around, and found to my surprise that emitters now work with multi/sub materials using the new 3dsMax plugin. Cool! If the emitter is just in the multi-sub material, multi-light won't work. But you can apply an instance of the emmitter to a dummy object in your scene, and you can adjust the lighting then (I just applied it to a plane, and surrounded it with a sphere so it wouldn't interfere with the rest of the scene)
