Hey Vodka79, it was actually Maya's paintFX system, converted to polys. I then rendered this from the side to get a colour/clip map, and in maxwell applied this to a whole bunch of flat planes about 10 wide by 10cm high. I'm not at the office at the moment but I'll post the scene when I get the chance.

Cheers,

Hey guys,

Quick update on the grass. I'm still tweaking the colours, but for 9000 polys, I reckon it looks alright. It's a 3m squared patch, and I've nearly completed a script that can create a lawn based on a poly-shape that you have created. I'll update more when I can. Let me know what you guys think.

(Vid Details : 96 frames @ SL6 took 5 hours, making it just over 3 minutes per frame.)

On the chalet front, I've had a meeting with the architects who have finalised the plans, so I'm gonna be working full steam on this after Christmas. Speaking of which Happy Christmas everybody, I can't believe it's here already :D

Cheers,
Dr Merman

your grass animation is really convincing !! Great job !

Poly-intersections are not problematic in such applications? (good news if so!)

Happy Christmas to you!

Thanks tokiop :) Needs a bit of tweaking, but its getting there. And no, intersecting geometry is not an issue for Maxwell, in my experience anyway. Intersecting emitters can cause a problem though.

Have an awesome few days :D

Hey guys.

Well it's been a while since I posted...anything really, so I figured I'd upload these. Now, I'd like to officially state again, that architecture is NOT my forte :D
These images have been made in order for the architects to determine overall colour schemes, and I'm only now going to start work on making it look half decent and as realistic as I can get it. I'm currently trying to figure out what is wrong with them (apart from the obvious lack of grass + a better environment.) So far I have :

* The slate. This has been altered MANY times, and they've now decided on another colour, so this will be remodelled entirely. (Plus it's pretty ugly.)
* All of the wood except for the cedar (which perhaps still looks too flat.) I think that this is a map problem, and I'm looking for other texture files.
* Lack of extra detail (hinges/handles etc.)
* Dark interior.

Those are the main ones I can see. Let me know what you guys think. Like I said before, I really want to learn through doing, so harsh critiques are the way forward! Just go nuts... :D

Cheers again,
Dr Merman

here's all you need to know about architectural visualization:

give architects an inch and they expect a mile.
give architects a mile and they pick at every inch.

rusteberg

so far you've got about a couple of feet. the images look really flat.
you need to capture more of the space the architecture creates rather
than trying to capture the object of architecture. the better you
understand this space, (the negative) the better your architectural
renderings will become. also, the better you understand how things
are built (connect/join/touch) the better you will become at
achieving realism through detailing.

at least thats what i have learnt so far...... still learning

whats your camera angle? looks around low 40's??? maybe lower it.
the materials aren't much help either.

look forward to seeing how this turns out.

Wow. Thanks for the great reply, rusteberg, I really appreciate it. I completely agree with you about the flatness of the images. Maybe I'm approaching this from too much of a product design point of view (product design/animation is really all I know.)

I look at some of the outstanding architectural work on this forum, and thinking about it, what you have said about negative space makes alot of sense. There is such a huge jump between simply presenting the objects in the scene, and presenting them in a way that looks appealing. I think (/hope) your advice will go a long way towards pointing me vaguely in the direction of the latter. So thankyou :)

Well, I'm off to study many, many more pictures :D

Cheers, and keep the crits coming!

Hey guys,

Ok, after a long break the project has started back up, now that the main layout of the site has been decided. I've had to remodel the cabins for medium/long distance shots, but with the slate tiles modelled they are still ending up quite hi-poly. The trees shown are probably just temporary (the same model with random rotation and scale) and there are more to be added, as shown on the attached planting diagram.

I'll post updates as they come, and as always, feel free to absolutely slay me :D

Cheers,
Dr Merman

looks like everyone is catching on to the Architectural Sheet concept.

i think they are so cool. are you planning to model out the rest of the plan? the trees look tasty!!!
