the rule of thumb in film animation is 8 hours rendering per frame. that was thirty years ago like this, 10 years ago and will stay a little, i think. it's like a «moore's law».
that's all nice and easy. but to keep times down, everything must be faked which i just don't like.

I totally agree with you! I think we are slowly moving away from the motto "all CG is fake by nature - and so it will be". Maxwell is a first step from it (to my mind - no mean to offend anyone), but to make maxwell a HUGE LEAP from this motto, we need it to be faster! And i don't mean the program itself must be faster, just the render time. Using any method like GPU acceleration, silicone potonics processors, 80 core desktops...
Anyway, as soot as it will be usable for movie production - it WILL become a software of choice.
This is what i think.

let's think one moment where our culture would be without wars and all the crap in politics that is going on in this, OUR world. we have to get along! if we push the red button and 150'000 atomic bombs destroy our planet forever, well... there's no more person here to care. we'd leave our gods alone.

what kind of society could we live in? where noone would have to starve, die on aids or other diseases.

i want a fair world for everyone and my part is (or will be in future) to create pictures that help people «MIND» !

Exterior renderings with the new MR sky and sun take 2 minutes to setup. Make a sun system, choose mr sky and mr sun in the rollouts...adjust your shadows....turn on FG and set low, high, medium or whatever

This gets you a nice looking sun/sky system. MUCH better than the Vray system if you ask me. It's super simple and a HUGE leap from what you used to have to know about mental ray to do anything.

I agree about the new mental ray sky/sun. I was a bit skeptical after having used Maxwell's for so long and then discovering that I didn't really like the VRay system and some others.

But to my surprise it's very good indeed! It's very tweakable etc. I'm still not really comfortable with the tonemapping part of it because it seems to mess with other aspects of my scenes, but apparently you can use Francesca's tonemapping features with it instead, so I'll probably do that.

If you use Logarithmic exposure control it works great with it!
