I have new Core Duo E6600 processor at Asus P5B motherboard. I am not a stupid user, but I am not sure how to OC in Asus BIOS. I have experiences with AMD X2 overclocking. But AMD uses Hypertransport and Intel FSB. So there are diferrences, i think. And i would like OC only CPU not RAM, if it is possible. With AMD it is possible. I heve 2x1GB DDR2 800MHz.

So please help me. Or give some some relatet link, pls.

Hi spekoun,

I have overclocked the e6400 on a P5b deluxe wifi/ap. Is your board the standard p5b? It makes quite a difference for overclocking.

Overclocking the core2 duo's is definately harder than overclocking the x2. Because of the way... well read this first:

Short version: it can be easier to overclock higher or below or above certain speed ranges because of how the nb strap clock is affected.

Basically, similiar to x2's or p4's you need to underclock your ram so that when you overclock the fsb you bring the ram back up to it regular speed. I underclock my ddr2-800 to ddr2-533 then up my bus speed from 266 to 400 (50%) so then my ram runs at 533*50% = 800.

After that, set your memory timings manually (hidden under southbridge settings I think?), set the memory voltage according to manufacturer, and up the cpu voltage to achieve stability (for me that's 1.375) and watch your temps.

Some people change a lot of other settings but I don't. If you need more help there are loads of guides out there or goto:

So i have Asus P5B-E not deluxe. I did not know, there can be some diferrences in overclocking. Deluxe version have much features, that i do not need.

Main problem i have is, that i did not find in BIOS FSB setting. Where in BIOS of your deluxe version is FSB setting??? I can set RAM timing, I can set voltage, but FSB frequency i can not find.... I succeed only with ASUS AI Utility in Windows. Via this utility i can set FSB frequency manually by 1MHz.

See the line 'cpu frequency' that is your fsb essentially. In order to see this screen to have to set ai tuning to manual as shown, that reveals all of these options.

I am not familiar with settings specific to the 6600 on that motherboard so do some searching on the internet.

Cooling: Zalman cnps9500led and on the northbridge I put a passive zalman cooler (can't remember model? - it's blue) - both are mounted with as5 (be careful using as5 on the northbridge).

I use the Infinity from Scythe, another good choice if you're still looking. Your case needs a certain width to have it fit, 20cm should be fine. Otherwise consider the Ninja, probably just as good. If my readings are anywhere near accurate, I'm getting 37°C after an hour of stress testing on 1.4v and 3.2GHz, my old Pentium-M didn't perform that good on water!

Are you running winxp64? I put 4gb of ocz platinum ddr2 800 in my system at first but in winxp I could only access 3gb - so I cut back to 2...

You have to run 64bit version of Win if you ave more than 3GB RAM. 32bit system can not adress more than 3GB...

Look in the handbook of your mainboard: my P5B de Luxe version recommend to use max 2GB at win32. I have tested 3GB with switch and have got crashes often.

WinXP64 - do somebody use it? Does it work stable?

Yes I read that paragraph, as it says: if you put 4gb in a p5b deluxe (which I tried) and set in bios the 'remapping' feature it will post 4gb and show it in winxp64. But my problem was I couldn't deal with winxp64 - it wouldn't support 2 of my large format printers and 2 important plugins in solidworks that I use (one is maxwell) don't run in the 64bit version of solidworks. So in the end I went back to winxp32 and returned the extra ram.

That ram is so expensive here that a 2gb kit costs more than a 6400 conroe chip! So 2gb = 25% of the system cost!!
