Seems overstated, but the guy can just steal your bandwidth or jump into your computer and make a big mess out of it... And microsoft (for us poor windows users) just makes it easy for them. I can tell you...

I became a paranoid, have 2 firewalls in the internet connections and a separete wired lan linking mine and Le Wife's computer for file and printer sharing.

Note that internet by cable is a shared medium where you and possibly all of your neighbours are hooked on the same bus.
So as you are maybe sharing the same line.. did you setup your local network with default values?

Oh and deactivate or encrypt your Wireless Network ;)
