For a dual-dual Opteron system would a 350W ok, or would I need to up to a 500W unit?
Any pointers much appreciated.

The 350w one you can archive in the trashcan as it won't be of much use at the very least you should have 500w, no less than that. The more juice, the better..

My psu is a 650w one and i got only a P4 3ghz.

Definitely get a quality unit, OCZ Powerstream are still among the very best in the affordable range.
The wattage of cheap units isn't a good indication of what you'll get - it's oftentimes the peak load with the ampere on the wrong rail. Not to mention they like to go up in flames, so always make your PSU an important investment.

I have a 700w OCZ gameXtreme which I picked up pretty cheap. It's runs quiet and has a pretty blue light. LOL

Really is one of the best deals out there.

Supermicro recommended 630W as minimum for the dual opteron motherboard.

I´ve used the Hiper PSU (Type R with omnigrid) 730W. Is pretty cheap, and its very nice that you can add as many powercords you need. I´ve also used the FSP 700W PSU, without any problem.

630W+ seems like a sledghammer to crack nuts? My X2 4800s run on 350w supplies and have no problems, an extra opteron in the equation would be around another 110w in the mix?
There must be a way to calculate exactly what a detailed spec needs, the higher recommendations must be taking into account an 'expected' need for multiple drives, bridged sli cards and the like..........I'm confused!

nope. actually a single dual core (Conroe 6600), but just in case the 500W wasn't enough for you (depends on the VGA as well, those newest beasts are quite hungry in terms of Watts) there's the 620W option:

What processors are you running/wanting to run?

I'm running a dual 280 setup on a Tyan Thunder K8W S2885 with an Antec TruePower 2.0 EPS 550W power supply and I have never had any issues.


NEWEGG.com has good prices on EPS power supplies. Here is a link to 500+W :

There are also combo power supplies that offer ATX and EPS, but I have never used one... Might be worth looking into also.

Most dual processor Motherboards, for Opterons at least, require EPS power and not standard ATX. Check your MB manufacturer website for compatibility.
