I have to say that I'm very impressed with Fry, they seem to be covering much more ground with their engine in a short amount of time when compared to Maxwell. The speed that they claim that they can render is truly amazing and is going to cause Maxwell a lot of trouble in the near future.

lets see.
at the beginning, most things seem to work well. over time more and more issues and extra-wishes come up. thats normal. all we really know is what maxwell allready put on the table.
i like the fact that we have good competition now with vray ppt and fryrender on the horizon. still i believe maxwell can keep up their advance, i just would love to be assured of that once in a while.
as a converted max to maya user i cant wait to see the advantages of a true 64bit maxwell with a complete maya-plugin.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something seems 'missing' from the quality of the renders I've seen so far..............render times are impressive but they do seem to lack that extra something, a certain quality in the finishes........or maybe it's just me?

Fair direct comparisons would have to be made by disinterested third parties. Good luck in finding some disinterested third parties.

Although my skill level with Maxwell and Fryrender is about equal, I'm not convinced that any test that I produce would be considered valid, as it is obvious that there are many prominent members here who question my intent and integrity.

If Fry has the rendertimes people write about it may well be the better engine, though I really need to see more artwork covering different fields.
But since they're hardcore conservatives with a 3dsMax and Windows focus, i got no use for them, nor they for me

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence guys. But I guess the thing with me is that I look at my work as coming from me and not from a render engine. To really be fair, comparisons have to be approached with a greater level of detachment than I could summon (not about software companies, but about my work).

I believe there are others more qualified than I am who would enjoy turning out boring controlled test scenes. But I also am not convinced that that is what sells software or necessarily demonstrates superiority, or even usefulness. Superiority is in the hands of the users. Usefulness is at the sole discretion of the user. Product loyalty is of no importance in my work as a professional visualizer. I would no more be loyal to software that didn't suit me as I would consider wearing shoes that hurt my feet.

Well, there's a good point. When modo 2.01 was released, looked at the gallery and was rather disappointed with the quality of the render engine. Took a look back not too long ago, saw some really amazing stuff. If there's a will...

Not the point Frances. Please take whatever scene you've made for a work, it is completly significant of real jobs and their constraints. In fine, it's what matters, at least for me.

When I am testing a release candidate for Fryrender V1.0, I will convert the scene I posted over there to a Maxwell camera and materials. At that point, I think my focus will be on general useage as opposed to feature testing. So the comparison will be somewhat equitable.
