Its a glass of some sort of the low abbe kind (maybe SF11 or similar) and it is also very clear optic-grade (so you may need attenuation of 15cm, or 30cm, or more).

What is particular about these materials? Apart from glass, diamond? A chrystal ior may be adequate, although I don't think we have one of those, wish we did.

Hi Mattia,
As I am sure you know, there is crystal of various sorts, full lead crystal with 24%+ lead content and then there is Swarovski with its 32%+ lead content and rumored to contain silver as well.
So unless someone has the ior data for their proprietary formula, I think we are all out of luck.
I engraved about 10,000 POP displays for them years ago and have a 60mm facetted ball hanging in my studio window. Nothing makes rainbows in room like it does.
I for one will be following this thread to see if a good ior of their crystal shows up.

Then you are better off doing a manual crystal material and use a super low abbe (say 10.0 or less)

Make sure dispersion is "on". If it is too much, bump the abbe to 15, or 20.

Well if you take a look, you'll notice quite a bit. Schott's BK7, LF5, all the Full Lead, demi Crystal table top products, Swarovski's propierary formula, water white soda lime for studio blowers, and Iittala-Nuutajarvi's barium crystal, etc all have very individual characteristics. Glass chemistry is *big science*. Anyone wanting to create realistic renders with art glass, table top items, etc. would be very appreciative of ior data for a wide variety of glass materials.
Suggesting there is noting individual about these materials is like suggesting "red wine is red wine, so why the differences in price?"
I look forward to seeing more glass and crystal ior materials available.
You might add sucessful glass artists to the Maxwell roster. Maybe even both of them.

glypticmax, ofcourse it would be great to have ior files for all of those materials, don't get me wrong. Especially with Maxwells abilities, it's a shame more of this data isn't available somewhere. I was asking him because I thought there was something that could be adequately emulated with the current material system, ofcourse it wouldn't be as good as accurate ior files.

I knew there would have appeared some hidden swarovsky lovers...don't be ashamed of it, @Mihai! Leaving jokes apart, thanx for the replies guys. I will try both ways, meaning tweaking with the material editor as @Thomas suggested (thanx for the link) and the .ior from @Mapro. About the public .ior database, @Glyptic, i guess that manifactures could be really interested in building one...this would mean encourage designers to incorporate that particular material into their products. Maybe this happens because maxwell, the reality emulator, is out only since less than a year!

Great thread, guys. Maybe we'll see some of these crystal varieties appearing on the MXM board? I completely lack the skill to make that happen.
I remember seeing realistic CG renders at Iittala's factory in 1989, so undoubtedly they have the necessary information to create an ior file of their barium crystal. Creating the renders was part of the approval process for new designs.
And I would bet Schott has similar information for their optic materials. Hoya would be another one that would probably find it useful.
The one I would really like to see is Ceska's "Alexandrite" dichroic. Its the only glass I know that changes from transparent blue to purple depending on the light source.
Has anyone seen a Maxwell render utilizing Orrefor's "Ariel" or "Graal" techniques? That could be quite a challenge duplicating those looks.
