I'm going to be gone for the weekend, so I set up a render to run the entire time I'm gone... I set it up last night, turned off anything that was running that is not needed (virus protection, etc., etc.)... Started the render... I came in this morning, only to find that MS Auto update had kicked in, updated and RE-STARTED the computer... SOAB!

SOOOOOO... don't let this happen to you!

I think this happened to me a few times as well, I think I already turned off the auto-install feature of automatic updates, but yesterday I suddenly noticed windows was about to restart because it installed some stuff.. so now I have fully disabled download + install, it will only notify me. Seriously, MS needs to find a more elegant way to deliver and notify this stuff..

The old concious vs uncouncious user problem. The majority of Windows users i could observe aren't very home in their OS, they handle it like a bank terminal hoping nothing goes wrong. Maybe MS can circumvent this problem with their many Vista versions, set the cheap versions on auto-pilot, make the professional ones very customizable and passive by default.

The auto update should be smarter... if the person have a program/file open... don't shut the f down!!

Any auto update is risky while rendering. I experienced mxcl hang ups when bit defender autoupdate is on.

I was just thinking the other day that it's suprising how few operating systems there are considering the many different users are out there. You're right that most people just pray it won't screw up, but the needs of a professional using a computer are so different. I have a feeling that Vista will just make things worse, and I'll have to learn a whole new list of things to turn off and unintstall and it still won't help me out much. Who cares how the desktop looks, I only see it if I'm starting up or shutting down.

I had a different problem; I turn all thi sh*t off... everything.. I can't tell you how many times I run msconfig to see what's going on... soooooo many programs don't ask anything; they just do whatever they want. I HATE HP for this; they install all kinds of auto-updates, and they don't even show up in the system! Out of no where, BOOM, there's another auto update... it USED to be the various installed software would ask to do this, now they just do it without a word. I run a very lean system; none of the crap that pollutes. Yet, here it was; I TURNED OFF auto-updates, and somehow MS turned it back on... same with the firewall crap... I WANT DOS BACK WITH A CONFIG AND BAT FILE!

It happend to me a few nights ago to. I guess they released something that we all got downloaded and installed.

I'm really pissed off now because as I mentioned earlier I turned off the auto-download and auto-install and set it just to notify if there were any updates.... well, fat chance of Windows listening to that, I walk to my computer this morning and it says it downloaded updates that are waiting to install... WTF!!!
I'm turning auto-update off completely now, this is just ridiculous..
