I have spent half of my weekend trying to get a gummy, or jelly like material, but i am not getting satisfactory results. I thought to blend a SSS layer and another one with high coloured transmittance, but it seems that those two layers are suffocating one each other....any hint? Thanks for help and i swear...even if i begun with this material for the contest i won't use it for that anymore!

Thanx for your quick reply. here's the settings for the main two BSDF layers. The 5-weighted one is just for adding neutral soft reflections (light grey for 0° REF, almost white for 90° REF, 40% ROUGHNESS), while the settings for the SSS are 15 ABSORPTION and 0,8 for SCATTER...maybe a really messed up material....

(yes.....it's sad but the orange one..well...is...you know)

PS: each croc is about 1cm thick

That's a tough one, but hmm.. i guess you can try dropping the roughness to maybe half of what you got now or even more. Your SSS value i have no clue about, maybe that's more related to the over all scenescale and lightintensity to give you any visible effect in this scene.

I think you better let a A-Team guy help you on this one.

I have a question that may fit in this topic:

How does sss interact with attenuation distance and transmittance?

for example, I think that there has to be some transmittance for the sss to become active and their color is dependant. I'm not sure if attenuation distance limits sss influence (the length of the scattered rays) but I think it should.

Does Nd affect sss?

Just to pop my head round the door here, I'm pretty sure that when you turn on sss, attenuation for that layer doesn't matter at all. Also those sweets look too good. I'm getting pretty hungry after browsing these forums nowadays.... :D

Thanks a lot guys for the support!
@Tom:those materials are exactly what i was looking for...wonder why i haven't been able to find them in mat lib section...i still have to learn mastering SSS since i have no clear ideas on how the main parameters like reflections and transmittance affect the result. It's testing time now...again!
I will post the results after testing
ManyManythanx again

1st update

Image

Mainly raised transmittance, lowered attenuation distance and changed layer's weight to 60-40...wonder why with the same value for Brightness in every single channel, greens seem to shine more (maybe because the green croc is closer to the light, or beacause of light's incidence?)

Ok, material's setup is finished for me but now the question is: will this image ever cleanup? (it's 16,68 SL....)

Last one looks very good ...

About the noise ... what benchmark do you get ?
Usually with images like that, having SSS and dielectric noise, you should expect level 21 or higher (I let them go to sl23 on a fast machine).

...ops, sorry doc...i forgot to tell you that the candies in the first shot were made with wax (they looked awfully...Bleaurgh!)

Sadly, I've run into that problem before....<looks suspiciously at half-eaten wax apple...> :D

Well, my machine couldn't be said Fast...it's...uhmm  8.8. Maybe because i am running MW under mac OSX, since i need to use the computer with other apps during the rendering process.
