:D No, nooo.. the subject is not which salt and pepper should we prefer. It's only about which salt shaker for what. It's funny there's no valid standard or definition out there.

Hehe.. you're right, I was intentionally referring to it ;) Because everyone believe one of them is the salt shaker and another one says in fact it's for pepper and having no standard universal definition is incredibly funny. We can simulate the light with billions of calculations but we have no idea about 2 things we have on our table in our whole life :D

I always thought that a salt shaker had less holes because you're not supposed to use large amounts, possibly it also dates back to when salt was a very expensive commodity (people used to bring their own to parties) and therefore less holes=less salt used/wasted

Tom, The one on the left is for toothpicks. and the one on the right is for Salt!
If you go to a restaurant in South America you'll probably not find pepper on the tables, only Salt and Toothpicks.

Usually people use the one with fewer holes for pepper.. as you usually pour a much smaller amount of pepper than salt.

My contribution is this; proper etiquette dictates that when passing the shakers, they ALWAYS travel together... no one should EVER pass just one or the other...

(Hey, I don't make this stuff up; I just do what I'm told... now get your elbows off the table)...

The salt shaker is the one with the rice added to it. (Rice combats "salt clumping" in humid climates) And since you don't want to add rice to your dishes, you need the small holes to let the salt out and at the same time keep the rice in.
