lebbeus,

this is a combi of your two layer method and ags. But i am not looking for the diffuse look but a clear look that are illuminated by the color of the lightsource itself and has some intensity.

But i might draw the conclusion that it's not only the material but also a lack of ability to simulate the light emittet from an LED.

I'm going to guess that AGS isn't a good choice for this situation--use a full-fleged dielectric, possibly one with a complex ior. The biggest difference I found was that the perfectly smooth layer needs to have a 100% weight and the rough layer(lambertian) should be 60% or somewhat lower--the layers in my example are identical except for the roughness and weight settings. I'll post the mxm here tonight along with some screen shots of the mat editor.

download glebe's scene (a few posts up) and play around with it, then check out the papers that Ivox linked to compare your geometry.

you could also try giving us a link to your scene--the image you posted before looked promising so I'm curious as to why the material isn't working out for you

I like that scene too jalokin, but I agree with lebbeus that AGS is probably a deadend for realistic LED results.
I've got my test scene rendering with your dual-layer approach lebbeus, have changed the second layer to weight of 30 but won't be finished cooking till the morning.
If that all looks good, then will try it in a 'real world' situation and see what comes out of the mix.
l8rs......think we're getting somewhere. :)

edit: ok, couldn't wait.......here it is at sl14:

sweet 8)

here is the LED material on the standard model, will post the mxs and screen shots later tonight.

I'll upload it to the mxm site when I've worked out the kinks (it's a little too blue right now)

Thanks lebbeus, I'll have a look at those soon. :)

Here's two quick tests with a blue epoxy, same geometry and led's set at 43lumens:

I don't know about you, but those look like LEDs to me 8)

thanks…Glebe made a good model to play around with :)

here's the clear epoxy material on the standard test object (roughness layer:30%) [download link is a few posts above]

Sorry for the poor quality modelling here, but I'm pretty happy with how the light propagates behind the case..........seems very close to what's happening with the real thing. :)

Ideally I want to look at fresnel lense applications next, but time might be against me.......lot of text to chew over before then. Big thanks to Ivox for digging out the technical papers. :)

So, I think its time to gather the information on these 7 pages and add it into a Tutorial. ;)

One thing that bothers me... is that since LEDs are so tiny and standard applications will be used only as a light source... using IOR and a all that jazz will add a sure unecessary render time.

I mean it looks perfect now :o (great render by the way) but can we optimize it a little.. ?

And since there are usually two kinds, We could have a distinction between opaque (difused lens) led and semi-transparent led.

Mmmh, can an emitter have some sort of emittance map?
