Here is a good and a fast sss turn >> around (hehe) solution..

open the mxs, and render with "-ML" option, there you have total control over everything..

- the bulb itself (emitting from up and down)
-the look of the shade (from opaque to very translucid)
-the light emitting from the shade

(note that one outside_shade object is hidden from camera )

Play with and understand the principle...
One mxs is better than a 1000 words.. hehe

and the result after 10 min. on my small comp..

Cheers and enjoy...

Yes, it is nice trick. And it was good to see your setup, for me.

BUT! This is exactly way, that i do not want to take with Maxwell. I can enjoy complicated light setting in Cinemas Advanced render. I bought Maxwell for his simple light setup. I hated these neverending light tests in C4D.

So i think, it is temporarily very good solution, but not final solution. It would be fast rendering of real geometry with SSS lampshade material. I think this the way of Maxwell should (and i think NL want to) go...

cheers...

SSS will improve in the next releases I'm sure... meanwhile you have a usable setup that also gives you real time feedback of the look you're after.. and it can't be so complicated, com'on, if I found it. hehe

the diffence with you C4D trick is that indeed the mixed results force you to tweak an good amount of time before getting what you want. Here it is not the case... you just adjust the different sliders while it's rendering and voila... done..

Thanks Spekoun and Sandy...

I noticed anyway that lamp shades have different translicidity, also some are very lit while they let little light go out... just all the styles in one...

cheers
H.

oups forgot... you would not get better results (regarding lamp shades) with real sss.. ya no...

definitly a way to do this, but I go along with spekoun, that I don´t want to tweak lightning settings till i find the right solution!

but for your image, definetly a good way!
