Stuart, .... think it'd be okay if we made this the 'unofficial' LED thread ?

You say that'd be be okay ?? oh, .....super, .....then let me start.

First off, ....what's going to be the best way to model expoxy casing of an LED I wonder..... ?? ....and how should the emitter be handled within?

I've done beta tests in the past and the results suck if you model everything as per reality. I'm wondering if we should handle the 'bulb' like we handle glasses of water/wine etc... ?? Well, ...not exactly the same, ...but I mean,... with some kind of workaround ?

Here's a model based on a classic LCD ....
This was just a start with the model form. No complex IOR's of the plastic, ....just a dielectric basic with a little frost added. I tried an internal emitter, ..but that sucked so ....I shut it off. I also tried adding an emitter layer, ....but that's not really it either.

I think I might hollow out the plastic next, ....then bring back the emitter......

...just thinking out loud.
Anyway, .....clearly the refraction/IOR's need attending too, .... do that later.

I've gone for an Nd of 1.51 for the epoxy, potted LED of 43lumens in the 'cup' recepticle.
It's not happening yet, the sss/dispersion on the epoxy is not coming through but here's the first attempt anyways.....

Thanks Chris, a touch of 6blade glare improves things, but no cigar in sight yet.

Stu, ...So how is the epoxy encapsulation modeled ?

....is it a solid ? ....or hollow?

Edit: ....still looking pretty cool though... :)

the last one is pretty nice... and the incredible thing is that it works even without power supply!

a part from that I am also looking forward to know if it is hollow or solid :?:

Hi Guys, yes it's solid..........but you're right Chris, I don't know if this is the way to go.

Well, ..I'm definitely figuring out what not to do.

A single layer BSDF with SSS just to see what would happen. It's not physically accurate--- I know , ....so the caustics aren't even close. Next !

Image

This one below is a cheat, ....it's a composited render.
First render used a physically accurate material for the epoxy with no other layers. (...to provide the caustics)

Second render is a single layer BSDF with SSS. (for the internal glow).

Layering those two yields the final 'cheat'.

So, ...that's one way to do it(sort of), ...but not what I'm looking for ....... but it's good to get it out of the way. :)

[excuse the horrible noise :P]

*** trying one now with both layers in a single material. Not so good yet....

Using Glebe's glare trick, .... :)

Now, ...if I could only get that to show up in the render.

Great that you've got the light 'collecting' in the end of the epoxy 8), I just couldn't get that to happen so far.

(Just making sure)
Are you guys also modeling the internal cavity of the epoxy above the emitter element ?
