Thought I would post this here, instead of starting a new thread.

I have been playing with the material editor lately with not much luck. I am trying to create a Cast Aluminum material. All of my attempts so far I either get a injected resin grey color, plus I never get any texture at all. I have my latest attempt down below. I kinda went off of Larsons paint settings with some different stuff. Can someone look at it and tell me what I am doing wrong please.

Thanks
Chris

I would start with two bsdf layers [94%] and [6%], for the 96layer, load the al.ior and add roughness 16 & anisotropy 40.
For 6layer load cu.ior file and same roughness/anistro settings.
Not sure about your bump map, do you have reference images for the quality of cast that you want? Are you wanting raw cast or finished/treated surface?

Thanks for the info. I should have explained what I was exactly looking for. I tried the way with the ior but I am needing a dull matt finished. Below is an image of what exactly I am trying to achieve.

One side is cast aluminum, the other side is cast silicone brass.

The reason for my map was becasue that is how I have done it in the past using flamingo and photoworks.

Thanks
Chris

HI Tazzer, thanks for the extra info. I bet you can still use the ior route but with roughness map/anisotropy-off and a new bump map. When I get time I'll have a stab at it.

Just a quick test, still cooking:

Used your bump-map [but blurred it] with value around 20, over 2 bsdf's using al.ior and cu.ior combined, still playing around with roughness setting. If you knew the correct alloying compounds in that right image, we could probably get it closer.

Hi tazzer,

I opened up some books...the only silicon-brass I could find was:

C69400 Silicon Red Brass:
- 81.5 Cu
- 14.5 Zn
- 4.00 Si

...and just a guess on the type of aluminum:

356 Aluminum Casting Alloy:
- 6.50-7.50 Si
- 0.20-0.60 Fe
- 0.20-0.25 Cu
- 0.03-0.10 Mn
- 0.25-0.45 Mg
- 0.10-0.35 Zn
- 0.20-0.25 Ti
- remainder Al

As mentioned, if you can give more detailed specs...I've got an awful lot of charts. :)

Here is all the info I was able to dig up for the Aluminum

Alloy Type = 535.2

Si = .10
Fe = .10
Cu = .05
Mn = .10-.25
Mg = 6.6-7.5
Ti = .10-.25
OE = .05
OT = .25

The one on the right is actually Silicone Bronze (Herculoy #876)

The only info I can get on this was

Copper 92%
Silicone 4%
Zinc 4%

Now for the questions.

How do these numbers relate to making the material? Is it basically creating a BSDF layer setting the weight map to the correct percentage and then choosing the right IOR file. Such as if it has 92% copper. I would create a BSDF layer with a weight map at 92% and then choose the Cu ior file!

Next question, would by enviroment cause the texture not to show up? Such as using an HDRI image insteade of using sky and light. Or is thier any setting within studio to cause the texture not to show up.

After looking what you have thier is by far better than I have even came close to. I cannot get a single texture to show up. Everythign is as smooth as a babies bottom.

Thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated.

...that's the general idea. 8)

About the texture, I assume you mean bump map? If you post one of the materials (with the map) that's not working for you...we'll get it straightened out. :)

Hey JD thanks for the support. I have posted a zip file up a couple threads with the texture that I was trying to get to work, keep in mind it probably isn't worth much to get where I need it though.

Yup, when I say texture I mean bump map.

It is pretty cool the way Maxwell uses the IOR setup. I used to work at a foundry and saw first hand what each alloy did., and the changes it made.

I just hope I can get something figured out soon so I can get some sleep. :wink:

Just thought I would add this. Here is the MXS file with the current Materials I have been trying. I hope everything is there.

UAU!!!!!

It is just amazing but... what about if I want to create a marble material( limestone, etc), wich is made of CaCO3. How will i get the right proportion for this material?????

Cheers
