Leonardo: uh... thank you!

I'll share materials and textures when i'm done. (i sound like NL sales person)
I'm going to make flat, metallic and pearl car paints.
Pearl will be extreme candy version.

Nice work LarsSon.

I'll hopefully be posting my tests later today.

The modeled clearcoat & flakes, is an interesting alternative, but I guess very heavy in mesh data.

Some more info from the daddy of car paints, House of Kolor (Main website:- http://www.houseofkolor.com )

http://www.houseofkolor.com/hok/PDF/Tec ... FMFUMF.pdf

Translucent flakes:-

http://www.houseofkolor.com/hok/news/Tr ... Flakes.jsp

Flake sizes:-

1/64”, 1/128”, 1/250”, 1/500”, 40um, 90um & 150um

Thickness controlled & weightmapped coatings should be good for the flakes, as I think you're already doing LarsSon.

Tim.

Great sources again Tim.

"Thickness controlled & weightmapped coatings should be good for the flakes, as I think you're already doing LarsSon."
That's exactly what i'm doing. Plus small amount of large bump too.

Waiting for your renders!

COULD SOMEONE GIVE ME A CAR? (for material testing use only)
i don't have any car models, but i'd like to
test these materials with right shape.
So, please?

Dosch has a free car available from their site:

http://www.doschdesign.com/products/3d/Cars_2006.html

(Down near the bottom of the page)

EDIT---

I just downloaded the 3ds version: It's low poly, but if you throw a Turbosmooth modifier on the various parts, it looks not too bad.

EDIT - take two

Ok I lied... It does look pretty bad....

Hello dudes!

I'm starting to get results for my car paint collection.
These materials will work in any distance - even extreme close-up.
Then the surface structure of paint and coating will become visible.

Here are few samples i've done.
They all have same base colour.
Only changed how metallic or reflective they are.
Only one texture used.

Materials will be shared when you and i think they are ready.

So, do you like those? If not, why?
Even few words from you are important.

looks really good !

but the first one looks a bit flat (no coating?)

metallic looks really good,
metallic x2 and x3 are looking like these color changing car paints,
don´t know how there are really called in english, here in germany they call them flip flop paint...

First one is flat. It's the cheap car paint.
If you don't have money to pay anything extra,
you'll get this. Not looking good, maybe realistic anyway.

There's one close up rendering coming.
It will show the flake system in Metallic x3.
