i would rather be happy if NL fix all the small bugs and smooth out workflow, rather changing things or adding more stuff.

first they should clean up, make the plugins to version v1, repair coop render, make it more ram efficient, give us 64 bit version, -hd, and resume etc...

please dont add things for a 1.0x release. this shoul be bugfixes mainly...

The very last thing I want is a comprehensive material database, I'll never use it anyway.
To my mind the material editor is about as good as it gets, yes I've had to re-learn 'how to' after using RC5 but the new system is so much better.

Procedurals? why would I want my surfaces to look like everyone elses? Quick fixes like that sound like reduced functionality to me. :?

I think you miss my point. I simply want the OPTION to use procedurals. Despite what you say, it still have its uses, and are sometimes more practical to use.

Mike, it must have strucked you as a total surprise that Maxwell actually could be used for other things than photorealism.
You try rendering out complete geometry(down to the smalles bolt) cityscapes with 10-15000000+ polys in poster resolution. How clever is it to use highres textures or complex Maxwell materials for the barely visible background buildings?

You´re right about one thing though, Maxwell ain´t my engine. I though it could be, but i guess i was completely wrong.

You can make simple materials for those "barely visible background buildings" in seconds with the current system. If you can't make out details, then there's no difference between a procedural you have a tweak and a low-res photo source you don't. You can keep arguing your theoreticals against those of us who are turning out what we need quite easily, but... why, really? If I can do it, so can you. So take the .00001% brain power required and learn.

Your discussion is quite interesting. Apart from the evident different points of view (I just hope the attitude is as smart and polite possible) I want you know that developers are looking at this feedback with the eyes very opened to continue improving Maxwell.

Hey Mike,

I have always thought your posts were the most direct and easy to understand. They were also very important.

Becasue I read them I am still alive !!! er....., still rendering

Don't give up on us

more simple then what we have now? for gods sake...how long did you actually work with the mat-editor?

once you understood the basics you can get to every material you need with a few tries of different values...you just have to know which knob to turn,...but its not like this editor is overloaded or too complex.

and the scream for procedurals? i say dont start with it because you cant beat seriuous procedural-generators like genetica anyway...and i recommend it to every one again to take a look to that smart programm. after you understood that (and yes its like 1000times more complex then maxwells cute material editor) you dont want to have a checkboard or a noise procedural in maxwell because you will be not satisfied with that kind of komplexity anymore.

NL should give the lazy ones and the beta-blocked frans more wizard-presets to give them trigger-satisfaction but thats it. a surface is defined by not only a preset-selection and there are alot of people out there that are actually interested in using maxwells paratmeters to do so. personally i find this editor close to perfect..and in combination with tools like genetica i cant think of anything to improve material creation even more.

what NL should focus on is core functionallity of the application. "resume-render", working coop, clever performance-tweaks, a gui that remembers my paths, 64bit-support, rendertime displacement,...

...and not about some fucking material-db. this is a community job to create a website that hosts mxms. maybe NL even wants to create a container-format that not only contains the mxm but also the textures?

maybe NL wants to setup a material-DB and play smart with including this site into the material-browser? poser does something like this quite efficient.

Ok, good point. Folks, drop by the maxwell wiki, there's an outline for a fucking material database! :)

Log in, post your mxm's, setup info, real world references/photos, whatever...could be a useful resource

No, no, absolutely agreed with KRZ! Hard to understand at times, what's happening on this board... As rendering is only one part of my daily work, I am certainly far from being a top-visualizer. However, even after adding a certain amount of complexity (compared to Beta), I would still say, that Maxwells System is by FAR easier to handle, than any other product I have used before.I can clearly state, that my results are getting better.

Thanks Mike and Mihai for your great attitude!

oh well, that's perfectly fine. I was only pointing out that getting that overexcited over other people's opinions about the mat editor is just bad for one's health.
