Thanks for this interesting post. I've been struggling with Maxwell since V1 trying to get decent looking renders and constantly running into DOF problems (very shallow) and lights that either burn everything out or fail to appear at all. I read this post and a couple of others and came to the conclusion that my problems might be to do with mayas absolute scale. Sure enough if I scale all my objects x100 Maxwell's renderer is finally giving me the looks and predicatability I was missing. (Like many maya artists I prefer to keep my maya unit scales as defaults for the reasons you mention.) - My only wish is that I had know about this earlier. Maxwell is sensitive to absolute scale in terms of balancing its light energy.

I definitely agree with this. I think a scale/units setting in the Maxwell globals would be very useful.
