Sorry, I assumed you were referring to displacement which is not the same thing as a bump map. Displacement actually modifies the geometry during render based on a bitmap, where bumpmapping is a smoothing type rendering algorythm which doesn't modify the geometry but 'fakes' displacement using bitmap to modify the surface normals for rendering.
I thought I had seen maxwell V1 images which supported bump maps... perhaps I was wrong.
