ppt rendered using lightcache in both primary and secondary rays.
Yes you have to use sec. rays also.
Sample size used for lightcache: 0.002

So this is fixed version with only two light sources
and one reflection plate on top.

V-Ray ppt - 9h - P4 3.4

I thing that these gaustics are more realistic than Maxwells
in that image hdesbois made. Not so beautiful at all, but quite
balanced and natural. And so soft caused litlle blurred metals.

Hope you like it.

But you're almost missing completely the sharp caustics caused by the little area light, and also there is supposed to be a reflection of the larger area light in the gold ring.

Mihai: you are right. I think i'm going to try with non blurred reflection.
It could make sharper gaustics too.

What do you ment about those reflections. I have two area light sources.
Exactly same size as in the original 3ds scene.

Is this setup correct? ThomasAn.? anyone?

The one on the left is correct, but the one at the bottom is supposed to be a reflector, there's a much smaller grid there which is supposed to be the small area light :) Try to give it about the same strength as in hdesbois render so we have an equal base to compare. I'm almost done with the mental ray version.....not too happy with it but 3 hours tweaking is enough....

 aaaarrgh. I imported scene again and there it is, small emitter.
So that's why it was so hard to simulate same kind of light situation or
get sharper gaustics. It's quite hard to know what object should be light
or reflector. When i import 3ds there is only 63 unnamed objects.

Ok, i'm still goin to render new version. Trying to mimic Maxwell.

Hmm, there should be a small rectangle very close to the rings. I don't see it in your image. So, this was the culprit.

Here I updated the instructions image, to make it more clear for everyone.

Mihai :)

Thanks for giving it a try. Can I post your image in the main thread ? ... or ... you want to work on it some more ?

Those distortions are wierd though ... I have never used MR before, so I am not sure what it means. :?

I think I know why, the imported obj's had points which shared the exact same space but were not connected, for example the inner flat part of the rings, and the groove on the outside. So in XSI I merged these points together so it would effectively make one object. I'm rendering now in Maxwell to see what happens.....10 min setup, already rendering :) :) :)

so here are my tries on my PIV 3.4 GHz

cinema 4d 2h35min (have to change the blurry reflections though and something is a little off with the caustics)
Image

maxwell SL 18 in 19h45min (setup in really no matter of time ;-) ) DOF is a little strong (should have used fstop 5.6 instead of 4)

i tried in fR2 for cinema, but something didn´t work out. so if holger reads this. please tell me how you got caustics for the area lights.

see yous

Nice big k :) I think you need to increase quality settings on the C4D render cause the coins look like they're floating now.
