Ok, that's not the fastest render (lvl21/ 21 hours), but the setup has been made in no time. The longest part was to figure out the POV. I'd be curious to see if anther renderer can match the caustics' quality.

Although I've never used it , ......I've always like the look of FR. ...nice quality.

aaah holger,

how did you make the caustics in FR2 work with area lights. somehow it doesn´t work here on my system.

i already wanted to post in the finalRender forum about this problem, but then i saw your image.

cheers
michael

p.s. looks really good for 27min by the way !

Thomas, ......when we're done with this, I think we should take up Mihai's ida(whatever that is) ......and move into other material tests/scene. I think you know that most engines do a decent job with metals, but it's the other materials where we'll see the separation begin. But, this is a pretty good start ...........

woo 8) Looks like a photo to me :) Also I see you assigned proper roughness to the surface of the coin (blurry reflections).

Again, thank you !
(I will post your image on the main thread (to keep them all in one place)

Here's too samples.

First rendered with Finalrender Stage 1.
2h 32m. Gaustics not working well.

Second rendered with V-Ray progressive pathtracing.
1h 36m. I'll cook better version later.

I used my home pc - P4 3.4 1G ram. (so damn slow machine)

Tweaking for FR was about two hours, but for V-Ray only 10 min.
V-Ray ppt is really simple to tweak, just like Maxwell.

Hi Larson,

There are supposed to be two emitters in the scene
a) a small surface in the front of the rings (this is one area light)
b) the large vertical surface on the left side (this is another area light)

The other surfaces are simple reflector planes.
I used my home pc - P4 3.4 1G ram. (so damn slow machine)
Actually that is good. This test is preferable on single CPU machines.
(No render farms please)

What settings did you use for the ppt image ?

(You probably have ppt in both primary and secondary. Right ? )

I think that once you specify progressive path tracing for either, the engine excludes the first/second bounce mode and goes directly into path tracing in which its all done at once, so you can specify it for both, but i don't think its necessary...sample size set to 0.0 for unbiased, subdivs you can think of like sample level in maxwell, the higher it is, then longer it goes on, so keep the number high...

ThomasAn: Yep! I just noticed it two minutes ago when reading your post in cgtalk.
...well thats easily fixed. So the one in top should be reflector only?

I really enjoy this test. So many small things what you can't miss.
