Gradients or curves are useful to obtain luminace and crominace variations of a single bitmap.
Actually to have the wanted material result you need to make in photoshop 2 to 5 different bitmap variations for each material channel. With Gradients no.
That means 1/2 to 1/10 memory resources needed.
